7:25 pm, Beijing Day 2, 建外SOHO
Made by yusheng
I actually quite like this shot. Too bad it's a little blurry, otherwise I would put it on figure-ground.com/. By the way, this is one of the best-designed mix-use mega highrise projects I've seen anywhere. It's simple and modern. It's done by a Beijing-born Japanese architect, Riken Yamamoto. It's like a New York loft apartment building done in the style of a typical Vancouver building. Quite handsome. And the massive complex as a whole creates very interesting visual textures at the street level. Beijing and China have finally moved away from tacky architecture, but they're unfortunately still stuck in the mindset of using tacky English names for their great new bulidings. The current buzzwords seem to be Soho and MoMA. Everything is Soho-this, or MOMA-that. They're co-opting these place names from NYC to lend cachet to their projects. Sad. But you want to know what's even sadder? Here in Taipei, we have buildings call MOMA as well. Except, we don't have the good architecture to offset the terrible naming. So it's just tacky names on tacky buildings. Even worse, there's one called, get this, LV. I rather sleep on the street than live in a luxury building called LV. Oooo, it's so luxurious it's called Louis Vuitton! Sigh.

Jingguang Drama
Made by China Chas
Drama at the beneath my office window. Two men are carrying out a protest on this bridge, and are threatening to jump. As a result, two crash mats have been brought out, causing traffic chaos at this busy junction. As normal, a large crowd has gathered to watch, and traffic is still trying to get through but just jamming itself solid. Admittedly, the traffic here doesn't need an excuse to jam itself solid. I am not sure about the reason for the protest. There was a similar one a few weeks ago: a man climbed the EPSON sign to the right and threatened to jump (so the crash mat was wheeled out again). I wasn't sure whether to post this, as there are obviously a couple of personal tragedies going on here. However, as with the previous protest, it all ended peacefully about half an hour later when the men were talked down safely, although car horns could be heard for a long time afterwards due to the traffic chaos. It's easier to see what's going on in the full size version.

a different, common, wasteful approach
Made by Shreyans Bhansali
With my limited time, this is the best I could do to capture something that had been my experience, but I hadn't thought about until Burtynsky mentioned it in 'Manufactured Landscapes' - most apartment units in the developing world don't have central air conditioning, instead most apartments, and rooms within houses, have their own AC units - a wasteful approach, but practical when some may choose not to install ACs, and building costs have to be kept low and passed on to individual owners. Beijing, 19 April 2009 Here's Burtynsky accepting the TED prize in 2005 (the slideshow is far, far better than the talk): www.ted.com/index.php/talks/edward_burtynsky_on_manufactu...

Beijing street corner
Made by Eric Flexyourhead
The short, colder, and wet winter days mean I haven't been out shooting anywhere near as much as I'd like to. Which means I've been spending a bit of time looking through my archives to see if I can find anything remotely interesting. And I have to say that looking back at photos from 2007, I really didn't know what I was doing with my camera. I think I've learned a reasonable amount in three-and-a-half years that have followed my second visit to Beijing, but I also think that I've still got a hell of a lot to learn. (I honestly still don't like 98% of the photos I shoot!) So here we have your typical Beijing street corner, somewhere not far from Silk Street, north of Jianguomenwai... photographed while on a photowalk with . March 11, 2007.

Blue God
Made by musicmuse_ca
For those of us trying to come up with our resolutions for the New Year, I just wanted you to know that he is available for consultation at the Urging Department of the Dongyue Temple. According to the helpful sign located at his Urging Department at the temple: Urging means pressing on to go ahead. Taoist creed holds anyone who exceed himself in Taoism should not only obey the Taoist code, but also go ahead with accomplishing good deeds Something to consider in the New Year. You can leave an offering and red tablet prayer at the front of his Department. Perhaps he will be of assistance, you never know! Have a happy and safe New Year!

Empty Expressway
Made by China Chas
The deserted westbound carriageway of Chang'an Avenue outside China World Trade Center. This Beijing's most important street, and traffic is normally nose-to-tail here. This week, 43 Africa heads of state will be in Beijing for this series of meetings. In order to welcome them, the roads have been festooned with posters, lanterns and lighting, but not with cars and taxis (which have been banned from certain roads). In addition, factories and building sites have been closed down for a few days, resulting in less pollution and therefore great conditions for photography!

Third Ring V
Made by China Chas
Third Ring Road, Beijing. I'm going to redo this shot in better weather, but I wanted to add this one for now. It's a gloomy day in Beijing, which means the driving is EVEN WORSE than its usual appalling level. A combination of a badly designed junction and useless drivers results in an unnecessary tailback of several kilometres. For another rant about Beijing traffic, look here

CCTV Tower
Made by *Alebi*
CCTV Tower HQ from a Diffrent angle. Picture is taken from a diffrent angle on my way to the Yin Tai Centre to get the main picture and overview. Impressive piece of work. See details about this amazing piece of architecture on the other picture Ive posted from this building :) I don't mind invitations, but please no big, shiny, flashing, glitter graphics, they will be deleted. Also, please contact me if you would like to use my pictures for any reason. Thanks!

Behind The Hoarding
Made by China Chas
CCTV viewed from Guanghua Qiao on the Third Ring Road. This also shows the contractor's novel solution to one of the many interesting problems you come up against when constructing a sloping building - see the notes. (At least, this is what I think is happening!) This is one of the hoardings that was cleaned up recently after the local council decided to ban advertisements. I'm sure we can all agree that it looks far prettier now.

尼姑1--- Buddhist nun
Made by ZenFlex Studio
This Buddhist nun looking at her mirror right after came out of a simple local breakfast restaurant. The man sat inside the restaurant was looking at her. It is a little surprise to see this scene. Traditionally, Buddhist monks and nuns do not care too much about their appearances. That is why it so interest me. I guess the man inside the restaurant was thinking the same thing when he was looking at her... The world is changing!

CCTV Tower - China Central Television Headquarters - 央视新大楼
Made by Meiguoxing
The most remarkable of China’s new architecture, designed by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren, China’s New Central television headquarters, aka Big Shorts or Big Underpants, twists the idea of a skyscraper quite literally into a 49-story-tall gravity-defying loop. Lady in Red
Made by Fispace
Beijing - PR China Its raining hard, I am jetlaged. Having a look at my window in my hotel room and watching down I just saw this lady from the Staff running on the platform roof. Instant shot - having jumped on my camera ! Solitude on this roof - rain - hard and hot rain these days early august. I just retouched the contrast and cropped a bit. Related pic: Better large. :-)

Beijing Skyline Series - TVCC
Made by rolight
Works are underway to dismantle the spaceframe steel structure and titanium zinc alloy cladding of the Television Cultural Centre building (TVCC) in Beijing. Reports from local news say the concrete structure (slabs, beams and columns) didn't suffer damage by the fire from February 2009 and are meant to be preserved for the rehabilitation of the building.

CCTV Building Development Construction
Made by Dutch Tom
With the TVCC tower in the left part of the frame. The first slightly blue day in quite some time! View from the south west. Unfortunately, I've had to start watermarking my images, as it seems there are many uncredited copies floating around- some even with other Websites' URL on it. If you'd like to use my images, by all means, just ask.

Building On Fire
Made by China Chas
Sheets of flame emanate from temporary construction site buildings just north of Beijing's Central Business District. Fire broke out on one structure and spread very quickly to two others before being brought under control. More news here.

CCTV building, Beijing
Made by thewamphyri
CCTV building, Beijing China. When this picture was taken, this building and its companion the were both locked up behind 8ft razor wire topped fences. There was construction going on inside the fenced area, but it was not quite clear what it involved, although it appeared to be unrelated to the refurbishing of the TVCC building.

Wisdom
Made by musicmuse_ca
Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich. If you stay in the center and embrace death with your whole heart, you will endure forever. - Tao Te Ching # 33 by Lao Tzu
