Bebelplatz

The Bebelplatz (formerly Opernplatz) is a public square in Berlin, the capital of Germany. The square is on the south side of the Unter den Linden, a major east-west thoroughfare in the centre of the city. It is bounded to the east by the State Opera building (hence its prewar name), to the west by buildings of Humboldt University, and to the south by St. Hedwig's Cathedral, Berlin's oldest Roman Catholic church. The square is named after August Bebel, a leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the 19th century.

St. Hedwig's Cathedral (German: Sankt Hedwigskathedrale) is a Roman Catholic cathedral on the Bebelplatz in Berlin, Germany. It was built in the 18th century by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The King's friend, Ignacy Krasicki, Bishop of Warmia (later Archbishop of Gniezno), officiated at the Cathedral's 1773 opening. The Cathedral was named after the patron saint of Silesia and Brandenburg, St. Hedwig of Andechs, and commemorated the arrival of Catholic Silesian immigrants to Brandenburg and Berlin. In 1931, the bishop of Berlin appointed Bernhard Lichtenberg as Canon of the Cathedral Chapter of St Hedwig, who after the kristalnacht prayed publicly for Jews in the evening prayer following. Lichtenberg was later jailed by the Nazis and died on the way to the concentration camp at Dachau. In 1965 Lichtenberg's remains were transferred to the crypt at St. Hedwig's.

Bebelplatz is a square across from Humboldt University. It is the site of the infamous book buring by the Nazis in 1933 (which was also a scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). The group of people in the photo are gathered around a rather novel memorial. Below the square is a room, visible only through a skylit, that contains only empty shelves. There is enough room on the shelves for 20 000 books, the number of books that were burned here by the Nazis.

For our third morning in Berlin, we had a historical walking tour that ran from Marx-Engels-Forum to Checkpoint Charlie. It covered some places that I had walked by one my first day, but our tour guide (a history student at Humboldt University) provided a lot of interesting stories that provide more insights and context.
