Female Eclectus parrot (Native to tropical Australia)

Female Eclectus parrot (Native to tropical Australia)
Made by ianmichaelthomas
Impossibly beautiful Australian native tropical parrots! The colours are absolutely stunning! I first thought these eclectus parrots were soft toys! They were perfectly used to people, only metres away. The electus parrot is most unusual for having such differential colour schemes between male and female. ElectusParrots are boldly colored birds. The male is bright green with blue and red patches, and the female is crimson with a blue belly. Their feet are very unusual; the two outer toes of the foot point backward and the two inner toes point forward. This gives the parrot an extremely powerful grasp so it can manipulate objects close to its bill. These birds are tree dwellers and live around lowland in tropical areas. ElectusParrots are strong fliers and fly high above the forest canopy. In the day time they fly in pairs or small parties in search of fruits, nuts, nectar and leaf buds. In the evening they engage in display flights before they gather in groups of about 80 birds to roost for the night. Body length: (beak to tail) Males: 420–480mm; Females: 400–450mm Wing span: Males: 900mm; Females: 890mm Weight: 615g Scientific name: Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi (Gk. eklektikos = select, pick out, L. rorare = bedewed, macgillivrayi = after the ornithologist who discovered the species in Queensland) Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi is the largest of twelve subspecies of eclectus parrot. Plumage between the sexes is markedly different, even in juveniles. Males are predominantly emerald green, with scarlet red on the sides of the abdomen extending across the underwing, and dusky feathers on the remainder of the underwing. The upper wing is emerald green with blue outer feathers. The tail is emerald green on the upper side, fading to light blue with a white tip, and on the underside the tail is grey-black with a yellow tip. The lower beak is black, and the upper beak is orange fading to yellow at the tip. The eye is orange-red in colour with a grey eye-ring. Females have a scarlet-red head and neck, with a darker red tail and back. The upper side of the wings are dark red on the inside half and blue on the outer half. Under the wing is dusky with a vivid purple-blue band that continues under the body and around the back of the neck. A purple-blue ring surrounds the yellow eye, and the upper and lower beak is black. Both sexes have a short, square tail. Habitat and distribution: Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi is endemic to Queensland (only lives in Queensland) and is the only subspecies on mainland Australia, with one other subspecies, E. r. polychloros, found in the Torres Strait islands. All other subspecies are located in Indonesia, New Guinea, and several Pacific islands. The eclectus parrot is found in one region in Queensland, the Iron and McIlwraith ranges of eastern Cape York Peninsula. They mainly inhabit the interior and edges of lowland rainforest; however they can also be found in the higher rainforest regions. Diet: The diet consists of fruit, nuts, seeds, flowers and nectar, obtained from the tree canopy. Great flight aviary, Melbourne Zoo, Parkville, Victoria, Australia

To this shot in Southern Cross Station. Was setting up the tripod and the security (in yellow) came running over telling me I wasn't allowed to use it and no flash. Then he get's on the 2 way, talking to some guy watching me on the CCTV saying that it was ok here, but not on the platforms. Still used the tripod, but not fully extended and managed to get this. Not what I was planning to get but it will do. Enjoy - Canon 5D Mark2. - ISO 100, f16, 13 sec, 20mm. - Canon 17-40 f/4 L. - Tripod to see the detail Single shot exposure, then +2,+1,0,-1,-2 from that file to create what you see here. Processing Photomatix - Tonemapped generated HDR using detail enhancer option Photoshop - Adjustment of hue/saturation - Adjustment of curves to increase the overall contrast (Linear) - Adjustment of levels - USM on Background Layer - Reduced noise with Noiseware Pro - Sig/Borders Added About Sothern Cross Station Southern Cross Station is the most important rail terminal in Victoria and has been redeveloped into a world-class public transport interchange, with fast rail connections to regional Victorian centres and new facilities for rail, taxi and bus passengers. Now more than just a railway station, Southern Cross Station is a combination railway, shopping centre and bus terminal. The shopping centre includes a Coles supermarket, DFO - Direct Factory Outlet and over 100 other shops, bars and restaurants. On Spencer Street between Collins and La Trobe Streets at the western boundary of the central business district, it is the hub of the state's regional railway network, serving as a terminus for long-distance V/Line trains. It also serves the twice-daily Countrylink XPT service to Sydney, and The Overland to Adelaide three times per week. It has a bus station with 24-hour Skybus service to Melbourne airport. Southern Cross is one of five stations forming the City Loop, a mostly underground railway that encircles the CBD. Southern Cross and Flinders Street are the only stations in the Loop that are above ground.

Every time I go out without my camera or not intending to shoot I see so many people that would make for perfect strangers. Then when I've got my camera out I normally flounder around, not seeing anyone. On the way to drop my friend off at the buss to the airport I counted at least 4 and told him of this strange phenomenon. He laughed and said the train station we where walking in looked like a good spot, and that I should hang out there once he was gone. I did. Saw no one. Untill a good time later at least. I spotted this stranger as they where walking away from me. The distinctive hair colour grabbed my attention and I made chase. After descending two sets of esculators and curling back the way we'd come they ducked into a candy store. I waited outside and tried to pick my settings. When they came out I asked and they where happy to take part. I feel a bit awkward saying they all the time, but I'm honestly not sure what gender this stranger is. My best guess is that it's a girl dressed as a male character from an anime (japanese cartoon) who was meant to look androgynous. When I asked what they where up to I was told there was a cosplay (anime dress-up) event happening at the docklands pier and that I should come along. I had planned to head to the St Kilda festival but the cosplay event sounded like it'd be rich with interesting characters to photograph. So I killed some time and then rode over to the docklands pier. Or at least where my phone told me it should be. Turns out docklands has at least 3 piers. In my search for this cosplay event I found a closed concert in a shed, 2 out of the way but very busy bars, a set of markets and a vintage automobile show. But no cosplay. This is the seventy third portrait of my attempt at the .

Melbourne City 8 Hour Timelapse

Melbourne City 8 Hour Timelapse
Made by night photographer
I've recently shot an 18 hour timelapse of Melbourne City for a video I'm working on - this photograph is a stack of the photos from the night period of those 18 hours - from dusk to dawn, approx 8 hours. The video will be up soon, I'm just editing it together with a bunch of other things I've shot over here. There's also the odd frame that look's amazing, for example I managed to capture a thunderbolt as well as an epic full rainbow. These shots will be appearing soon so look out for them. So it's 257 photographs (one every 2 minutes) of varied exposure lengths, mainly 15 seconds. F11 at ISO200. The photograph looks like it's suffered a little bit of motion blur, kind of expected considering I'm in the windiest part of Melbourne. Also, normally I would take out the plane trails etc but they just look like scratches on a negative and it's something I really like! So yeah, I'm pretty happy with this one mainly because of how different it is to my normal work. I'm a huge perfectionist too, and I think the flaws in this photograph actually work for some reason. No Photoshop was used whatsoever (!!!) other than stacking all 257 images together - This is not HDR.

Street Photography Now Project # 35 1. Nominate something you are going to go out and hunt for - the more abstract the better 2. Give yourself a time constraint 3. Go out and start work 4. Ask yourself why everything else that you encounter is so much more engaging than what you are hunting for 5. Ask yourself whether the time constraint is a useful tool - Richard Wentworth I had nominated to myself to shoot girls in sluttish clothingat a public demonstration. I set off on the tram to the Slut Walk (a unified statement about sexual assault and victims’ rights and to demand respect for all )but became disenchanted with this event and so I walked and trammed to the docklands precinct. Just the fact that I was moving ...caused me to see a lot more. Exercising my brain with Photo-gym I had given myself 4 hours. Time wasn't a problem. Because from the front door the abstract journey began. well I guess I did fulfil my object of shooting abird

Happy 4th Birthday!

Happy 4th Birthday!
Made by night photographer
Yeah I'm getting old - I've been using flickr for 4 years now so I'm celebrating it with a shot I absolutely never thought I'd ever ever get! So my 4th birthday present is a 4 hour star and moon trail of Melbourne city. I was incredibly lucky with this one - I just set my camera up overnight capturing another timelapse and the moon decided to rise half way through the night. It only stayed clear for half of it and because I was timelapsing there's gaps in the stars (one picture every minute rather than constant). I never thought I'd be able to post a star trail of the city without faking it completely in photoshop, but it seems there's not enough light pollution to block out all the stars. 240+ pictures - 30 seconds, f/13 ISO100 - No editing (other than stacking). I'm gonna keep trying to get even longer trails don't worry. You can expect 12 hour ones in the winter if it stays clear all night! =)

Trying out another new medium format camera. Introducing the Great Wall DF-3, also known as a Chang Cheng. It's a 6x6 SLR with a removable lens, although only one lens was ever made for it. It's about 3/4 of the size of a small TLR like a Seagull or Yashica, with a similar WLF and film loading mechanism. It's pretty solid and optically sound, as well as having a decent range of shutter speeds and aperture settings, so it doesn't really fit into the toy camera category. The bokker looks pretty smooth. Stoopid me didn't realise there was a 645 mask in place, so I ended up with 12 photos with big spaces in between. Also means I had to crop a bit as the composition was a bit mangled. My favourite cat - Snow Leopard

My favourite cat - Snow Leopard
Made by ianmichaelthomas
I just love snow leopards - such a beautiful animal, and such a worry that it is critically endangered. Unfortunately, Melb Zoo, where this cat lives only has this wire cage - no clear glass viewing area to take better photos. Fortunately for me, this beautiful cat was in the right place in his enclosure to allow for the depth of field and the focus to almost eliminate the wire cage.....almost. I don't know how to use Photoshop or such programs to post-process the photos to eliminate the cage. This is exactly how the camera captured it. Melbourne Zoo has three snow leopards - this male, an older female, his mate, and a young female, kept separate due to the females not getting on. Melbourne Zoo, Parkville, Victoria, Australia

THE SOUTHERN CROSS STATION

THE SOUTHERN CROSS STATION
Made by James Chan "JC Inspiration"
Melbourne has so many awesome architectures for photography! The Southern Cross station features a wave-shaped ceiling and is designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, a prominent English architect known for modernist buildings. He is the founder of Grimshaw Architects, and they are known for their design of transport projects. I wonder why he chose a wave-shaped ceiling for the Southern Cross station, maybe I can find out if I am lucky enough to meet him one day. Also, I was pleased to find that one of his projects was the London Waterloo station because I took a HDR shot there as well, and you can see it here, ! James Chan www.jcinspiration.com

Finally got off my lazy arse and shot a roll of the Rollei R3 that's been sitting in the fridge since last year. It's supposed to be an improved version of the that I've been playing with for a while. Looking at the negs, it seems to have the same basic characteristics - soft, heavily grainy, low contrast. Which is a pretty crappy set of features for a general-purpose B&W 400, but comes in handy for giving an organic feel to urban landscapes that are sharp, smooth and contrasty in real life. The base is way less curly than the old Cube too, although still not as flat as a good Fuji or Kodak film, and no longer blue. And it seems to respond pretty nicely to the red filter. Yay!

These shots are taken from an elevated walkway and can manage to get the camera lens between the wire fence to get the clear photos This worked out better than I expected! I was hand-held, with the lens poking through cage wire! Melbourne Zoo, Victoria, Australia, has a terrific lion park - currently occupied by four enormous fully grown male lions! They are very close, and I have often seen them cheek by jowl, all 4 of them sleeping in the sunshine. They seem to enjoy each other's company. The boys are 240 Kg in weight, as big as they get, and are 6 years old - in their absolute prime! Royal Melbourne Zoo, Victoria, Australia

This young Sumatran Orangutan has a guilty look - and won't make eye contact with his mother! Photos taken Royal Melbourne Zoo, Victoria, Australia. Melbourne Zoo has set up a wonderful area for Sumatran Orang-utans - including a pole forest, to give them experiences of climbing and swinging as wild orangu-tans do. There is a special program to educate zoo visitors about these magnificent great apes - to help raise awareness of their needs - in particular to stop the destruction of their homelands. Melbourne Zoo is actively taking part in programs to buy back land, and redeem it for a wildlife sanctuary in Sumatra.

Not my first attempt at photographing lightening, but my only successful one so far. My first attempt was back in the UK nearly 4 years ago and I didn't even get a bolt, then last week I managed to capture one by accident in my timelapse (see previous picture). This one however is the best one so far, but considering Australia's temperamental weather conditions hopefully you'll be seeing a lot better ones! 3 different bolts blended into one exposure and a slight crop (was shooting wide to try and get as much sky in as possible). No photoshop 'enhancements' =) 15 seconds f/11 ISO200 17mm.

One of my favourite photos from my first attempts at zoo photography with my then new digital panasonic point and shoot camera. Royal Melbourne Zoo has a well planned Lion Park - currently there are 4 enormous male lions, 6 years old, between 230 240Kg each, at their absolute prime. Lions have a wonderful lion park, lots of grass, hillocks, rocks, etc to give them stimulation - food is often placed in hidden locations - getting the lions to use their powerful sense of smell to find the food. Royal Melbourne Zoo is justly famous for its beautiful world-class gardens as well as its extensive animal collection. Melbourne, the Capital city of the state of Victoria, Australia has a number of sister cities around the world, including Japan. To honour that, the RMZ has a magnificent Japanese styled garden - a large peaceful and tranquil part of the zoo, and within is a lovely ornamental lake, in which many waterbirds make their home, including this beautiful swan. Web Bridge by Robert Owen & Denton Corker Marshall - Docklands HDR#4 The sculptural Webb Bridge was the result of an art competition to transform a disused cargo link into an integrated artwork that could also function as a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. The old Webb Dock link and its new connection to the bank is now a unified sculptural form. It expresses the gestural flow of the river below and also references Koori fish traps, drums and baskets - the everyday tools used by Aboriginal people to harvest this once fertile land.
