Behind the Royal Chapel #8

Behind the Royal Chapel #8
Made by an untrained eye
September 27th, 2005 - Granada, Spain I was leaving the Royal Chapel and about to return to my hotel when suddenly I heard coming from one of the tiny alley-ways that criss-cross the area around the cathedral the most piercing, anguished cry I had ever heard in my life. Immediately, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck. It took me a couple of minutes to locate the source of the cry : the man in the green tee-shirt, white socks and cap in the photograph above. Together with his guitarist friend - a quite superb flamenco virtuoso who turned out, curiously, to be not Spanish but Italian - he was performing the unique Andalusian song form known as cante jondo, best known outside Spain through the works of Manuel de Falla and Federico Garcia Lorca, who described it as follows : The cante jondo approaches the rhythm of the birds and the natural music of the black poplar and the waves; it is simple in oldness and style. It is also a rare example of primitive song, the oldest of all Europe, where the ruins of history, the lyrical fragment eaten by the sand, appear live like the first morning of its life. For almost an hour the pair performed - watched throughout by the gorgeous couple seen holding hands here - with an intensity and purety of emotional expression that I have never heard before or since. It was quite simply one of the most remarkable moments of my life. When finally their performance ended - the singer simply stopped in the middle of a song, took a huge swig from the bottle he had carefully hidden in a doorway and marched off down the street - I spoke with the guitarist, who spoke more than passable English. Naturally, I asked him about his partner. He is gone now, he said. He will be back one day soon. Maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after. Then, after pausing for a moment in order to be sure of finding just the right words, he added, He is mad. Not a little mad, you understand, but very mad indeed. But he is harmless. I'm proud and flattered to say that this image has been included, alongside work by some truly outstanding street photographers, amongst 60 Incredible Street Photos in the section The Beauty of Street Photography in Smashing Magazine.

VITA ET MORTE

Feliz Navidad!!??

Feliz Navidad!!??
Made by Juan J. Márquez

The Monasterio de San Jeronimo is one of the many hidden jewels a tourist can find in Granada. As soon as you pass the outer cloister walls the noise of the city is muffled and when you enter the inner cloister, you just stepped back in time. This is one of that times when the low dynamic range of JPGs just isn't enough to do justice to all the subtle tones in the environment. And this is also one of the reasons to shot RAW. This image was tone mapped from the RAW file using qtpfsgui and the Fattal algorithm (you can see the parameters used on the tags). One of the smaller architectural gems in Granada is the Corral del Carbón. Dating to the 14th century, this is one of the older Moorish building left in Granada. One enters through an elaborately decorated horseshoe arch, which is an unusual example of exterior decoration (arab buildings tend to focus on interior decoration). The underside of the arch is a wonderful example of muqarnas, where carved or molded geometrical forms are used to create elaborate surface textures which were then often further decorated with, e.g., painting. These tend to catch the light in cools ways, giving a strong sense of depth to their surfaces.

* Y yo no he muerto.

Granada Cathedral #6

September 27th, 2005 - Granada, Spain Two days after returning from Berlin, I was boarding another plane heading to altogether warmer climes. After a week in the post-modern frenzy of Berlin, it was a relief to find myself in the more languid environment of Granada - a place where, at times, one gets the feeling that time is standing still; or perhaps it would be more precise to say that it is a city in which one's awareness of the permanence of buildings (and the evanescence of human existence) is heightened - a sense I tried to capture in this photograph.

Last one from Granada....lots of noise reduction in ACR followed by blur and high passing to try and restore something worthwhile. Need to get a mini tripod or a bean bag for my travels! This building had amazing lighting. It is hemmed in on all sides, so the windows are all up at roof level. It gives the interior a darkly oppressive mood down at floor level, but when you look up all is bright light, dizzying columns and incredible vaulting!

Free? It looks like in Granada there are people who offers their self without any interest, I did not try to call, but if you do it, do not forget to use the 34 before the phone numbers. You never know... #340 @ explore 29/10/08
