The Gileppe Dam (French Barrage de la Gileppe) is an arch-gravity dam on the Gileppe river in Jalhay, Liège province, within the Walloon Region of Belgium. It was built in the 1870s to supply water for the wool industry in nearby Verviers. The monumental structure with its unusually thick profile played an important role in establishing an international standard for masonry gravity dams as a technology for major water supply systems. It was considered one of the strongest dams in Europe at the time, and it was the first dam built in modern Belgium. De Gileppestuwdam (Frans: barrage de la Gileppe) is een stuwdam in de Belgische provincie Luik, in de gemeente Jalhay. De toevoer van water wordt verzekerd door de in de Hoge Venen ontspringende Gileppe Het belangrijkste kenmerk van de dam is een 13,5 meter hoge en 180 ton zware leeuw uit zandsteen. De leeuw staat bovenop de dammuur en werd zo neergezet zodat hij trots uitkijkt in de richting van de slechts 5 kilometer verwijderde grens met het toenmalige Pruisen. [bron: wikipedia]

Close to Eupen in Belgium is the GILEPPE DAM. The dam was constructed between 1869 and 1878 and is one of the oldest in Europe. It creates a lake of 125 hectares at the confluence of the rivers Vesdre (Weser in German) and Getz. The artificially created lake supplies the water for the area of Eupen and greater Liège. Visitors can park their car nearby and walk over the dam.
