8383 Barnet Highway, Burnaby, BC. A mill town at the turn of the century, this park still has remnants of its early days. The remains of the mill's scrap burner juts out into the water, resembling a small castle. In mid-December merry makers gather at Barnet Marine Park to watch the flotilla of Christmas Carol Ships sail by. A huge, cheery bonfire makes this a popular vantage point for this Lower Mainland custom. Burnaby Parks

Barnet Marine Park is located on what a century ago was the site of a bustling logging mill camp. Echoes of the past remain in the shape of a few concrete towers and the skeleton of a scrap burner. The Barnet townsite has a rich history. Starting as a small mill town in 1900 with a population of 150, it eventually grew to be a busy industrial area before the first Park Commission Development Plan in 1973 helped shape this spectacular foreshore park. Wednesday night after dinner, popped down to Barnet to practice some portrait photos. As you can see, I became a little side- tracked with the light, my wife was not impressed :-) This photo is straight out of the camera. Not even use of a ND Grad filter here. So, yesterday she made me go on a monster bike ride and I did an endo over the handle bars, now nursing my wounds..wife is now smiling. All I was thinking , was luckily I did not have my camera. May 12th-2010

Looking along the railway tracks at the Western end of the Barnet Marine Park in Burnaby, BC. This image has no post processing done aside from a saturation increase of about 5% and some noise reduction as well as the framing. The deep tones and black silhouette are the result of using a wideband circular polarizer, 2 ND8 filters as well as a ND Grad filter as well to slow the water and allow me to shoot directly into the sun.

just kidding... it's actually the remains of the old barnet saw mill which is now the barnet marine park, in burnaby. the sawmill was built in 1889 and after various closings & re-opennings, it finally was closed & dismantled in the 1950's.

Perfect conditions for panning practice...a 100 car train at close range. I discovered that you can make the trees disappear with a slow shutter speed. There is at least 5 little trees between me and the car.
