BARNARD

BARNARD
Made by brian.glanz
, alumna and former New Yorker. The garland shows Barnard's holiday spirit and uptown class. It's a right way to dress the stone, iron, marble, oak, and golden light... This BARNARD banner raises a related observation: I can't be the only one who cringes at banners stretched across museum, educational, government and other monumental buildings. These almost invariably feature deeply carved, person-sized stone letters and beautifully wrought iron gates identifying the building. That should be enough except that the good-old tends to be covered with the latest banner-based marketing message. I don't like seeing institutions reduced to the one-to-three-word, attention-grabbing slogans and schemes of Marketing Departments and Development Offices. That mentality belongs in bed with profit and persuasion. Can great institutions endure without a public relations campaign targeting an audience? In the glare and din of urban life, the machinated blur of modernity, maybe they must scrap for survival. I'm not universally against banners on buildings, but they are too often garish over garland, crass over class. This BARNARD banner made the shot brochurische, but on the actual scene it took more away than it added. The college identity was already carved, wrought, emblazoned, and more whichever way you turned. Everyone knows it's BARNARD without having a brand identity burnt into retinas and minds.
