The full moon embarks on its nocturnal journey across the skies of San Francisco. Shot from Yellow Bluff, Fort Baker, Marin County, California. The process that births these super-telephoto shots is definitely, how shall I say it, deliberate. You've gotta bundle up thirty five pounds of gear, load it into the car, drive wherever, unload it, and haul it to your location. Once you're there, you find a spot that's as calm as possible, set up your tripod, and then top it with your rig. After that, it's all execution. Frame, minimize shake, shoot. And once in a while, with some luck, all of the effort bears fruit. I've begun to develop sort of Zen attitude about the whole thing. To be sure, it's great to come home with some quality pictures in tow. But it's hard on one's ego to count on that. As time goes on, I find myself enjoying the entire exercise as much as the results. It's often cold. Usually dark. Sometimes wet. And even occasionally a bit dirty. Hard work. Rewarding because it is difficult. And somehow strangely romantic.

Jack Kerouac alley bridges North Beach and Chinatown. It is only about half a block long. At one end, the tiled side of the alley are an old bar and bookstore where Jack Kerouac hung out, so the legend goes. On the other side is Grant street, the main Chinatown corridor. The reality is that there's a blur between the two famous neighborhoods but if we have to divide, the line is right there. Chinatown & North Beach, San Francisco.
