Taho

Taho
Made by riacale
When I was a child, every morning I heard the familiar holler of a man who said Tahooooo!. It brought out giddy feelings of excitement as I run towards the kitchen to grab a small glass, ask my mother for some money and run out the door to catch the man who purveyed this deliciously sweet and creamy delicacy. Not uncommon in Asia, taho is a warm tofu pudding dessert mixed with caramel syrup (arnibal) and topped with minute tapioca pearls (sago). Yet, it is an iconic image of my childhood that nothing can compare to the style popularized in the Philippines. Everytime I went back for a visit and stayed at my lola's house, I would hear the holler again and be brought to the same childhood rituals from years back. I would rummage around for some money, grab a glass from the kitchen, and catch him to become a child again.

A Night of Rain & Reflections

There was a time I dreamt of being a travel writer. I still do but I write less and less. At the time these photos were taken, I was staying at my lola's house, which is right across the street from my childhood home. It was a time for introspection for me since I just finished a milestone in my life. I finally graduated university, a goal loaded with expectations since I was a child. That day I wrote, Philippines in a Raindrop as my feeble attempt to write something. My girlfriend likes it for some reason.

This is my other grandma who despite everything is still quite strong for her age. Although not as spry as before, I'm still happy that she is doing quite well.

Ginataan was one of my usual meriendas (afternoon snacks) when I was younger...it's a concoction of coconut milk, fruits, and anonymous gelatinous products!
