Bangkok, officially known as Krung Thep and always used in Thai ( helpinfo), is the capital and largest city of Thailand, with an official 2000 census population of 6,355,144. Bangkok is located at 1345'N 10031'E, on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, near the Gulf of Thailand.

Most of Bangkok's sights are concentrated in the "Old City" on . Out of Bangkok's many temples, the following usually make the top 3:

  • Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)
  • The Grand Palace, featuring Wat Phra Kaew (The Temple of the Emerald Buddha)
  • Wat Pho, home of the world's largest reclining Buddha and a famed massage school

Bangkok's many markets are an experience in themselves, see for some suggestions.

Itineraries

  • - if you have just one day to spare and want to catch a feel for the city

. . . this is not New York . . it's Bangkok. Even though the day was very hazy, as I said on , I didn't want to waste my 200 Baht in getting up the Baiyoke Sky Tower. A little bit of processing was needed in PS to remove the haze, and then converted to B&W which I think is better than the colour version. Note: New York, New York, So Good They Named It Twice is a song performed and composed by singer-songwriter, Gerard Kenny as an ode to his hometown, and state. Kenny wrote the song about myth versus fact and explains that the city is overall a great place (It was a really nice night for a good street fight or a robbery/But I always knew in my home town that would never happen to me). The line So Good They Named It Twice is a play on the fact the name of the city and state are both New York. New York, New York (as it is sometimes simply called) was the first hit for Kenny after a number of non-charting singles back home in the United States. In 1978, after moving to England the song was released. Although it got no higher than Number 42 on the UK Singles Chart, it remained there for two months. It also received much airplay, and was included on Kenny's Made It Through The Rain album, and the song's popularity helped the collection reach the top 20. Britain's Shirley Bassey later covered the song, as part of a medley of songs about New York City.

. . from across the Chao Phraya. I have not said this in a long time but this one really is worth viewing , I hope you can make the time. Bangkok's famous Wat Arun as the sun is setting last Saturday. I was there with fellow Flickrie Maxsimus and we were both amazed at the number of people who congregated at this spot with their cameras. Not counting any point and shoots, Nikon won 4 to 2 over Canon, with only one Sony Alpha in attendance. An enjoyable day, taking the water ferry-taxi to Tha Tien terminus pier and back (an interesting on-board pic to come later). If you can, make a quick visit to colourful Clown Eckie, Bangkok's very own clown jewel.

You'll realise I've been away for a few days, sitting in airports! Hand-held (had to be - no tripods allowed) from the Sirocco Bar, on the 64th floor of the State Tower in downtown Bangkok, so it's jack up the ISO and hand hold at f/very small number. Actually, 1/5 at f/2.4, 800 ISO, propping up on the support rail. It's a bit noisy, but this view will remain with me for a long time. And the Sirocco is one smart place to have a drink. The only place you can take photographs is in a small glass-lined circlular bar, right on the edge of the tower. Quite vertiginous. The Ratchapruek Road. I think.

On the banks of the Chaopraya, Bangkok. Please view LARGE. Not HDR - did the opposite here and tried to lighten the sky which was a very dull blacky grey, to try and bring out the colours in these old wooden buildings, some with corrugated (rusty) iron rooves. There was little overall light so the only adjustments were levels, curves, and a bit of lucisart filter at slight exposure setting.
