Life seems hard on the streets of Bangkok
Made by B℮n
Please take your time... to View it large on black Street vendors are a very common sight on the streets of Bangkok. Many thousands are registered with the Bangkok Municipal Authority (MBA) and they add to the gaiety and colour of the city. Traditionally, street vendors have sold ready prepared meals, including staples such as noodles in soup, tom yam kung and fried rice or else fresh fruit and vegetables, fish or meat. The men and women are required to work long hours for modest income. But street vendors seem to do a good business. I think their survival is partly tradition, but it is also convenience as the vendor comes right past your door. There are virtually no barriers to entry to be a street vendor. You can buy a used hand cart for a few thousand baht. There are markets all over the city selling wholesale fruit, vegetables, meat and almost anything else. For 50฿ a tuk-tuk driver will deliver it for you. There’s no fuss with business licenses or sales tax. And no hygiene inspectors either. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has a police force that supervises the fixed and street markets but they do not seem to trouble the vendors who keep moving. On the busy streets of downtown Bangkok this street vendor trying to sell his vegetables. Photo taken nearby Si Lom road - Bangkok. But remember not all Bangkok's many thousands of street vendors are just basic, poorly-paid noodle-sellers. There are some smart entrepreneurs too! there are street vendors who have organized international networks to bring innovative and new fashions from Seoul directly to the Bangkok streets, others who contract with local factories to manufacture under their own brand names and, also, vendors, who offer the very latest fashions in fruit smoothies and fancy cups of coffee at low, street level costs. The successful vendors are those who keep closest to their customers, physically as well as intellectually. That is, they make sure that customers go right past their stalls because they know that Bangkok residents have little time and are unwilling to walk even a few extra steps during the heat of the day. If that means they must occasionally break BMA regulations as to where they are able to stand, then they are prepared to put up with the occasional argument with a police officer. They are also prepared to contend with the shadowy mafia figures who seek extortion money from them, accompanied by threats of violence. This is not always an easy life.

Khun Charn Flower: Photographer. Bangkok, Aug 2007.
Made by adaptorplug
Khun Charn Flower takes photos in Bangkok's infamous Pat Pong. I've known him for years and a few months ago I asked if I could take a few photos of him, they are also in this set. Charn gave me a few minutes to photo his arms and go through the regular pointed finger under the chin poses. I showed him the photographs and also the comments / views / favourite notes members had left on flickr. His face lit up and took off his shirt and allowed us to see his bodywork. This style of tattoo are related to Charn's spiritual protectiion and were applied by monks at a temple bashing a three foot long needle with a small hammer into his skin, having to re-dip the tip in a pot of ink every two or three taps of application. All the while I took his photograph Charn said, in Thai, I am an old man, I am now an old man. 55 isn't old pal. Though it may explain why he rides a huge Harley Davidson motorbike. De framed and resized photograph is available here...

... don't wait for the good woman. She doesn't exist. There are women who can make you feel more with their bodies and their souls but these are the exact women who will turn the knife into you right in front of the crowd. Ofcourse, I expect this, but the knife still cuts. The female loves to play man against man. and if she is in a position to do it there is not one who will not resist. The male, for all his bravado and exploration, is the loyal one, the one who generally feels love. The female is skilled at betrayal. and torture and damnation. Never envy a man his lady. behind it all lays a living hell. -Charles Bukowski // same girl: PHOTO taken by this crazy guy/

Tale from the crypt . .
Made by grantthai
. . continued. Another from my day out with , when on Sunday we ended up visiting the Chinese cemetery halfway up (or down) Silom Soi 9, near Chong Nonsi BTS station. Much of our time there was spent fending off the many barking mads (soi dogs) that wanted to chase us off their territory. When they came close (fortunately not too frequently) I dropped my camera to knee height and walked threateningly towards them with the dangling camera. <Mike>'s tactic was to pretend to pick up a stone and to throw it. Both tactics were good enough to keep the 15 or so wild dogs at bay. This is a mini-Stupa (with another to the left).

The Ritual Dance
Made by Ursula in BKK
Muay Thai, was originally called dhoi muay or simply muay. As well as being a practical fighting technique for use in actual warfare, muay became a sport in which the opponents fought in front of spectators who went to watch for entertainment. These muay contests gradually became an integral part of local festivals and celebrations, especially those held at temples. It was even used as entertainment for kings. Eventually, the previously bare-fisted fighters started wearing lengths of hemp rope around their hands and forearms. This type of match was called muay kaad cheuk (มวยคาดเชือก). Wikipedia

When the weekend comes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Information: These photos are taken on Bird's Eyeview Photowalk with my Chevron's colleagues on February 5th 2010 from 18:30 to 20:00. The concept of the shoot is building and perspective from the bird's eye view. Since I'm not that good with landscape or building shot, these are some photos I've got. They mostly consist of point and shoot, object in urban, street, portrait, and candid. The location of the shoot is along Sathorn Road, Bangkok.

RED LIGHT District

Happy Beer Garden, Surawong Road, Bangkok, at night. Surawongse runs parallel with Silom Road, a main shopping and commercial thoroughfare, and one of the streets (sois) that links them is the (in)famous Patpong. At Happy's, tourists either rest and recover from their arduous slow treks through the stalls of the night market or prepare themselves for their forays into the many bars: plain, go-go or naughty, that line both sides of the soi. If you go upstairs - be warned! A 3xp handheld (yes) hdr, leaning backwards into a convenient lamp-post to steady my shots.

week two/fifty-two. my external flash's battery was dead and my camera's flash was stuck. but the underexposure actually made it more interesting. when you try your best, but you don't succeed. when you get what you want, but not what you need. when you feel so tired, but you can't sleep. stuck in reverse. and the tears come streaming down your face. when you lose something you can't replace. when you love someone, but it goes to waste. could it be worse? listen.

you see I loved hard once, but the love wasn't returned. i found out the man I'd die for, he wasn't even concerned. my heart must have died a thousand deaths. compared myself to Toni Braxton thought I'd never catch my breath. nothing left, he stole the heart beating from my chest. i tried to call the cops, that type of thief you can't arrest. pain suppressed, will lead to cardiac arrest. diamonds deserve diamonds, but he convinced me I was worth less. listen.

. . Kitchen Restaurant and Karaoke. (Krao Sawan Baan Na.) One of the earliest shots taken with the then new D300. A handheld shot at 800ISO. I'm accompanying the office on the annual staff trip, 150 clicks from Bangkok in the hills behind the Eastern Seaboard. I may not get broadband but I can at least use my Edge card to upload (maintain my daily post) - although speeds on the Edge card will be such I may not be able to comment on your streams until I get back on Sunday. Will try anyway. Have a great start to your weekend everyone.

No Priority
Made by Ian Fuller
A Toyota Hiace ambulance of the Royal Thai Police Medical Evacuation Center tries to turn against the traffic on Rama IV Road Bangkok. It is probably on its was to the Police General Hospital with an emergency case. It's red lights are flashing but it does not have, or isn't using, its siren. Despite the fact it is at an intersection controlled by police officers in a nearby cabin the driver has to make his way through the oncoming traffic. Emergency vehicles aren't given the same priority in Thailand as they are in other countries.

Captain Bush Lane, Bangkok
Made by Michael LaPalme
This old house sits directly across the street from the Sheraton Grand Orchid Hotel by the river in Bangkok. I wasn't able to find the name of this building anywhere online. I guess I'll have to make my way back down there again and see if I can find out a little bit more. I asked if it was possible to get inside the house and the motorcycle drivers who prey on the tourists coming out of the Sheraton informed me that it was all locked up. Damn. Its a shame the way these old houses are disappearing.

the eve of Songkran 2009. Silom Soi 4. Bangkok. took this shot while i was walking back to the hostel. Didn't expect the water fight to start the night before the actual dates for songkran. this was taken using a sony cybershot that i borrowed. I put it inside a ziploc, so it won't get wet. interestingly enough, the plastic did create some effects i didn't anticipate. like old film camera shots (enhanced the colors a bit on CS3). it's cool though. something different.

A chinese tombstone . .

. . in Bangkok, not Dodge City. Snapped while out with on Sunday. As I mentioned earlier, we wanted to do the abandoned Russian embassy (couldn't get in), a deserted tower block (couldn't get up) and ended up doing cemeteries (don't we all end there?). This is the Chinese cemetery halfway up (or down) Silom Soi 9, near Chong Nonsi BTS station. Much of the cemetery was flooded, and we had to avoid water and a lot of barking mads (soi dogs).

Traffic jam on Silom Road below; the elevated walkway linking the skystrain and underground stations is to the right. During the height of the Red Shirt terror last year, an RPG hit the station you can see near the top of the frame killing and injuring scores of innocent commuters. Silom Road. The walkway between Silom Subway Station and Sala Daeng Skytrain Station is a good vantage point for photos. The angle's important - if the person gets too close the angle isn't good. It's fun experimenting as there are so many beautiful women to choose from. Other photos can be found at picasaweb.google.com/ian.fuller/BeautifulWomenOfThailand
