Statue of Ban Josip Jelačić on the square named after him. Josip Jelačić was born in Serbia in 1801. After having attended military school in Vienna, he participated in various Austro-Hungarian campaigns, most notably against the Ottoman Empire in the Krajina. He was named ban (viceroy) by Emperor Ferdinand V to quell the Croatian autonomist Illyrian movement gaining popularity during the Hungarian revolutions in 1848. He adopted a series of measures with different degrees of success. He abolished feudalism in Croatia but achieved little economic gains for the peasants. He finally united Dalmatia and Krajina but was unable to promote Croatia's self-rule to the rulers in Vienna. The statue was installed in 1866 on Vienna's orders, despite protests from some Zagreb officials. It was removed in 1947 by Yugoslavia's government as Jelačić was then considered an Austrian collaborator and a traitor. It was reinstated by Croatia's government after independance.
