Baltrum is an island near the coast of East Frisia, Germany. It is located in the middle of the island chain of the East Frisian Islands and is the second smallest permanently-inhabited island in the chain. It is situated between Norderney (west) and Langeoog (east). There are two villages on the island - Ostdorf and Westdorf, although they have essentially merged into one. Baltrum is part of the district of Aurich, Lower Saxony. From the small port near the village of Neßmersiel (municipality Dornum) the ferry shippes to Baltrum.

One of the typical flora of costal regions, Seabuckthorn (Sanddorn). A plant which exists in male and female, so only half of them carry the typical orange berries during autumn. It mainly is eaten by birds, but also used to make marmelade or liquor. It has a slightly sour taste and contains lots of vitamin C.

Sometimes really old fragments of brick show up on the beach. They may come from old houses sunken into the sea in the 17th or 18th century. Before the reinforcement of the island started in the 1870s, its geographical location not fixed. Several generations of buildings literally have been washed away before.


Fighting the sea

Renovation of a breakwater. Just started when I was there. It will be completely surrounded by a steel bulkhead and the build new from the ground of the sea. Until surrounding is finished, work can only be done during ebb tide, as on flood tide it is completely under water.

One of the oldest breakwater construction to the western end of baltrum. Made of wood and sandstone in the 1880's. Most of these have been modernized the last years, replacing wood with steel and special concrete.
