Humanim - American Brewery

Humanim - American Brewery
Made by Chauncy.Primm
The American Brewery is an historic former brewery located at 1700 North Gay Street in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Built in 1887 by John Frederick Wiessner, a German immigrant, the American Brewery in East Baltimore was one of the largest breweries in the state of Maryland. At its peak, the brewery employed 61 workers; 16 in brewery work, 17 drivers, 14 bottling house, 8 garage men, and 6 office workers. The central tower of the building housed a 10,000 bushel grain elevator. Prohibition forced the shut down of the facility in 1920. The Weissner family sold the brewery to the American Malt Company in 1931, who modernized the interior equipment and operated the brewery until 1973. The building was listed that year in the National Registry of Historic Sites. The neighborhood around the brewery building has long been in decline and has been largely forgotten by politicians and the media during the later half of the 20th century. Once a vibrant area, about half of the homes and other buildings in the area have been demolished or are vacant. Basic services such as grocery stores and restaurants have disappeared as well. In 2006, the City of Baltimore moved to acquire 200 abandoned properties in the area for future demolition or rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of the American Brewery may serve as an impetus for further investment in the East Baltimore neighborhood. Due to its central location in a struggling neighbhorhood, interior space, and architectural quality, the brewery is seen by urban planners as an anchor for future community and economic development initiatives in the area. It is hoped that new employment and social services will attract additional investors, improving the quality of life for current and future residents. In recent news the Brewery has become the new home for Humanim, a Columbia Md non-profit, has recently secured $22.5 million for renovations of the American Brewery Complex into their new headquarters. The City of Baltimore approved the building permit in early 2004 and work is now complete. The American Brewery is situated in the center of one of East Baltimore’s most blighted neighborhoods The building looks better than ever and Humanim encourages people to come visit and see this beautiful building.

USA - Baltimore - National Aquarium (Pacific Sea Nettle)

USA - Baltimore - National Aquarium (Pacific Sea Nettle)
Made by Lo Scorpione
After New York, Boston and Washington D.C., I am now in Baltimore. The main attraction here is the National Aquarium, reputedly the best exhibit on marine life in the entire States. I think some aquariums will rear at this, but hey, I didn't invent it ;-) National Aquarium, Baltimore After paying the hefty entrance fee I was expecting incredible exhibits and surprising facts for the visitor, but the first 10 minutes inside were such a disappointment, I even took out my ticket to see if there was any 15min refund policy on the back! The whole place was just crowded with overweight Americans on holiday, snacking on burgers and ice-cream, clogging all corridors and passages and making an enourmous noise. And nothing to see either, just a couple of giant, kindergarten-style panels with 2 random facts on jellyfishes. I even had to que to get into the first exhibition room! But then, once inside the jellyfish room, the crowds dispersed, like fog on an early summer morning, and I was left to marvel at these colourful creatures. And to take in all the amazing explanations on the threat they have come to pose to marine - and by extent all - life on this planet. Due to pollution, over-fishing of their predators and global warming, these little bastards are taking over control of large areas of the oceans, ferociously killing entire fish populations on their way. Not so cute anymore, huh? Pacific sea nettle Going by the latin name of Chrysaora fuscescens, this particular jellyfish is quite popular at aquariums, as they are brightly coloured (crowds love this) and require little maintenance (staff love this). They can reach a bell diametere of over 1 meter, though most specimen are smaller than 50cm, with tentacles as long as 4 meter or more. They can be found along the coast of California and Oregon, and have been spreading north to Alaska and west to Japan.

smoke in blue

smoke in blue
Made by Idle Type
Capturing smoke is tricky. I took a ton of shots before I got this one, which I think ended up pretty good. But now my apartment reeks of incense. Lighting and tech info: This image is inverted. I shot against a black background and hit the smoke with an SB-600 flash positioned behind and to the right of the incense stick. My objective was to illuminate the smoke while keeping the black background as black as possible. I probably should have snooted the flash, but I was too lazy to do it. ... 70mm, shutter speed 1/250, f5.6, ISO 100, manual focus, smelly incense. ... Once I got the image I wanted, I inverted it in photoshop and messed around with the hue and saturation levels to give the smoke some extra pop. UPDATE: Read more about this shot in the current issue of Nikon World magazine.

The USS Constellation in Baltimore, MD's Inner Harbor. Just having a bit of fun with this photo - not the most perfect composition but we were on a water taxi and were coming in quickly. It was a bit of a gloomy moment - the rain was threatening but it held off and then the skies cleared. Processed this hdr to bring out some color and lumenescence (too tired to spell that correctly :) Sidenote: Just putting in a plug for the charity I run. If you are buying ANYTHING from Amazon.com this year, if you visit my organization's website - www.booksforamerica.org - and click on the Amazon button, and then buy something, Amazon.com will donate at least 3% of the purchase price to our literacy programs! Patterson Park Pagoda, Baltimore MD

Patterson Park Pagoda, Baltimore MD
Made by crabsandbeer (Kevin Moore)
On Hampstead Hill, the ridge where the Pagoda now stands, Baltimoreans rallied on September 12, 1814 to protect the city from the threat of a British invasion. Urban myth suggests that from this vantage point the glow from the fire at the Capitol and the White House could be seen as the opposition marched through the nation’s capital. By water the British entered the Patapsco River and bombarded Fort McHenry. By land they amassed forces at North Point. As they marched on to Baltimore they were able to look up to Hampstead Hill and see Rodger’s Bastion - 100 cannons and 20,000 troops. The British returned to their ships and sailed away.

Domino Sugars Sign - Baltimore, MD

Domino Sugars Sign - Baltimore, MD
Made by crabsandbeer (Kevin Moore)
At night, the big red Domino Sugars sign, literally the size of a basketball court, glows from the refinery rooftop. . Like the Orioles, crab cakes and John Waters, the Domino sign screams Baltimore. It costs $100,000 a year to power and to keep the 1950s-vintage neon tubes in good repair. In this town, rich in the physical remnants of its working past, that's money well spent: a blazing reminder that people and machines still make things, that the world hasn't gone entirely virtual, no matter how much the Chamber of Commerce hypes the Digital Harbor and the dot-com future it hopes to house in the city's old factories and loft spaces.

A Vivid Attempt at Impressionism

A Vivid Attempt at Impressionism
Made by Extra Medium
Yes, it did look just this surreal when I was photographing this as well. I know it came out pretty vivid and high in contrast, but it was so bright out with all the clouds that it really did feel just like this. Now it's sunday, and it's nice out and there are no fires nearby... time to take the kids to the park and let them blow off some energy. So if I don't comment on your photos, I'll be chasing around some boys. But I'll make up for it during the week. Georeferenced to within the meter on the map right here ------------------------------------>

Inner Harbor of Baltimore

Baltimore's Inner Harbor is one of the most visited areas of the city. It has been one of the major seaports in the United States since the 1700s and started blossoming into the cultural center of Baltimore in the 1970s. Distinct in function and form, locals and visitors alike enjoy Baltimore's Inner Harbor and the surrounding neighborhoods that offer a variety of fine dining, cultural experiences and exciting nightlife.

This car is one of the great mysteries of my neighborhood. It's been parked in this spot for the two years I've lived here, and is barricaded on the north and south by two old sets of street car lines. I can't imagine how it ever got here, or how it will ever leave. Perhaps hydraulics are involved.
