This man is a traditional Turkish quilter sitting on the raised quilting platform in his shop. These wonderful satin quilts used to be in every household in Turkey. Sadly, they are slowly being replaced by modern mass produced blankets and each year there are fewer and fewer of these traditional shops to be found. It takes about two days to do the quilting on these and as you can see, he is not using a thimble! Normally the stuffing in these is taken out every year and aired and sometimes replaced - a time consuming task and one which makes us understand why they are being replaced by more modern coverings! a chance encounter

A few months on a photo course/trek we happened down an alley, first drawn in by the great laundry shots (who can resist those?!), but then drawn in by a group of gypsy women taking a break from their daily chores. They were sitting in the alley talking and listening to the radio and as happens so often in Turkey, a spark was ignited and we shared the joy of dancing together amidst the laundry.
