Pennybacker Sunset

Pennybacker Sunset
Made by Michael Tuuk
My first trip up the cliffs near Pennybacker Bridge (after 20 years in Austin...photography makes you all of a sudden make a point to visit these places). All day long the sky had been full of amazing clouds so I figured this was as good a night as any to make this trip. What an awesome sky and an awesome viewpoint (actually many different viewpoints available up there). Came away with 3 types of shots from the evening. (1) Pre-sunset where the sun was behind the clouds. Great backlit clouds and eerie looks in the sky. (2) The above view where the sun was sandwiched betwixt earth and clouds. Allowed for the cool starburst. Mix of clouds in sunlight and in shadow. (3) After the sun had disappeared beyond the horizon. This had the deepest color across the horizon but the darkest sky with all clouds in shadow due to the thickness of the clouds on the horizon. All of them were very cool in their own way but this is my current favorite. It was shot at f11. I also took this shot at f22 which made for an unbelievable sunburst -- the star effect extended across the bridge and all the way out of the frame. Loved that effect but it overwhelmed the image a bit. Maybe I'll post one of those for fun at some point. Even in this image (especially if viewed large) you can see effect just to the left of the bridge. [Update: Large starburst can be seen here: I spent about an hour up there, watching the changes in the clouds and the light, snapping off some frames every few minutes. What a great place to sit and reflect on God's awesome creation. 5-exposure HDR, f/11, tonemapped in Photomatix, merged with original exposures in CS4. Cleaned up with Noiseware and and final touches in Lightroom. Although I took this last night I'm cheating a bit and using it for today's dailyshoot.com photo [bird's-eye view]. I doubt I'll have time to shoot anything else today...

Project 365 Friday • October 15, 2010 The Plan Drive to Austin and shoot the worlds largest urban bat colony! Crowds gather every evening to watch 750,000 Mexican free-tailed bats take flight from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. I drove 80 miles to get there, didn't know where I was going ... and the sun was nearing the setting point. Frantic at this point! I couldn't find a place to park, got all turned around, and finally got out on the Congress Bridge! What Really Happened Nope! Silly me! I was on the 1st Street Bridge looking across the river at the Congress Street Bridge! And the gathered crowd! I was the only one on my bridge! You think that would've been my clue, right? So, too late to get to the other bridge. But I waited until the sun set ... and guess what? No bats at all! So I guess what bridge I was on was moot at this point! *heavy sigh* Shouldered my tripod, turned around and oh look! Hey! I also missed a most glorious sunset! Disgruntled Trina trudges down the steps towards her car and I happened to glimpse some pretty river lights! So, not knowing ANYTHING about night photography, I played with various settings and times and look what I got! Some light trails from a passing ferry boat! Cliche light trails I might add! And a couple of lame, cliche star bursts (that is what I was trying to get)! So here you have it, the Consolation (or Booby) Prize for this 'intrepid' photographer! Happy Cliche Saturday everyone! Off to catch a plane to Chicago! I'll catch up to everyone's wonderful cliches this evening! :D

View Large On Black Funny, I didn't intend to go out there again but for some strange reason that's where I was. So this is not the same setup as at dusk. This time it's past midnight and the moon straight up in the sky. There were even some rumors about meteors crossing the sky. I saw a couple tiny ones but not a single one during all the exposures. Oh and yes, it's made as an HDR and then with the darkest exposure blended over the highlights. Upon a few questions I'll add an update on How did I do it?: One effect that probably stands out is the result of white balance correction. I discovered that basically most night shots we see are not corrected for white balance. Our brain is locked tight to such images and since this is corrected it may puzzle your brain. The primary HDR is done in Photoshop with local adaption but keeping it pretty natural. The HDR are 5 exposures ranging from 2.5 to 30 seconds. Then as mentioned I adjusted for white balance. Finally I put the darkest exposure on top with a transparent mask. Then revealed the bright spots which actually results in darkening the bright spots in the layer underneath. Sounds complicated but it isn't. And there you go! ### Highest: #83 in interestingness - 12/15/2008 3:18 AM CST

this photo is included in the book, XGRAY VISION 2009 aka, the flash. (just a bit of an homage to douglas coupland) ...could also be called fun with overexposure. i'm pretty close to healed up at this point, so hopefully i'll be posting more soon. the only photos i've taken recently have been with the ricoh grd 2, so i have also been going back through my library looking for photos that would've been posted had i not been all gimpy. also the day job has been a bit crazy recently, as our big annual conference thing is next week, which means further delay for me to really get back into my photography groove, as i'll be busy taking photos of that all week (nothing you're likely to see or even want to see, unfortunately). hopefully i'll be back at it for reals after that. thanks for all the well wishes over the past couple weeks, i really appreciate it.

Dear Global Climate Change, I really really really don't like you ;) This has been the hottest and driest year on record in most parts of Texas. It's almost October, and it was 101 today in Austin. 90 days over 100 degrees and 156 over 90 this year. We actually had some rain today and hopefully it was the last 100 degree day of the year, as a cold front is blowing in. As I type it's actually a little wet outside and theres a bit off fall in the air! I've been waiting for this for what feels like forever. I'm soooooo in the mood for some cool crisp air and a nice fall day :) There were really beautiful clouds this afternnon as some rain thought about moving in...and I was lucky to be near a high spot with a great view of the Austin skyline to capture them. To me...this is what something starting to change looks like. And I'm all smiles :) +1 in comments ODC - In the mood

4/18/2010: Must be viewed large on black at www.triarch23.net. This is a 5 exposure HDR. The longest exposure was 1 minute. I have seen many pictures of this bridge so I decided that I had to get a shot of it this weekend during my visit to Austin. The weather did not really cooperate during the day or at sunset, but it made for a nice night shot. this was taken around 11:30 PM. The Pennybacker Bridge in Austin, Texas bridges Lake Austin to connect north and south Loop 360 highway, also known as the Capital of Texas Highway. The road is widely considered one of the most scenic urban drives in central Texas, in large part due to this arched weathering steel bridge and the rolling hills that flank the road. In 2001, 48,000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily. Ten years prior, 22,000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily. from Wikipedia.

Gonna board, gonna board, gonna board the midnight train. ~Gladys Knight Austin recently opened a MetroRail train system around town, so we went to check out the downtown station tonight. Have not had a chance to ride it yet, but hopefully sometime soon… And several cab drivers slowed down for Mer as she stood on the platform.. The State Capitol of Texas at Dusk

The State Capitol of Texas at Dusk
Made by Stuck in Customs
I went down on Saturday evening to do some shooting around Austin and caught the capitol around sunset. There are all kinds of interesting things about the Texas capitol, like this cool underground Illuminati chamber you can see here, but the one thing that all Texans seem to know is that our capitol is 14 feet taller than the one in D.C. This is a source of pride for Texans, along with the cool and trivial fact that we maintain, in our state constitution, the right to secede from the Union. The capitol is made out of this pink granite, and it gets a little pinker at night at soon as they turn on the lights, especially against the blue sky. from the blog at www.stuckincustoms.com

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks! I have over 21,000 unread flickr emails - sorry but I am too swamped - but most of you ask questions that are answered in that tutorial, so there it is! :) As for the process, it was a tough night because I was on the edge of a bridge that was rumbling as cars went across. The evening was very windy, and there was a light driving rain right into my lens. I had to wipe down the lens after every few exposures and try to cup my hands over the top during the shot. from my daily photo blog at www.stuckincustoms.com

You can ask, but It wont be natural.. Pictured Walking downtown the above young lady requested that I take her picture. As I obliged, she begun to strike numerous poses. This brief encounter helped substantiate a previous notion I had dancing in my brain over the last few weeks. There is no more asking people to do portraits. If they truly want to be in front of the camera, they will ask you. While you can ask others, you wont get the same energy I got from the above girl. I'm pretty lucky to shoot for a couple magazines in Texas, so other than that, as far as I'm concerned, I'll shoot candids until I'm asked again. We should be doing a portrait session soon.

Been *way* too long since I was back in Texas. Good to be back home. First time for the boys to make it back to the home of 1/2 their heritage as well, so a very important trip for them. Non-HDR shot taken on Congress Bridge crossing Lake Austin on the downtown side at sunset (went there to watch the Austin Congress Bridge Bats). Would've been better to shoot this on the other side, but all the bats were on *this* side of the bridge :-( It's sunsets like this that make me miss Texas that much more, as this is pretty much what you get every day here. Never thought I'd see the day, but we finally left Japan. Spent half my life living, working, and raising a family there, and now I'm back where I started: Good Ole USA. Now this photo is dated, as its a month old and we're already settled, but will drip the pictures out over the next week or so with comments as to how we went about making our final decision. Non-HDR shot taken on the first evening of us 'living' in the US for the first time as a family. Granted it was in a hotel room in Austin, but this is all we had at the time, as we were living out of our suitcases with absolutely *NO* idea where we'd end up living. Austin, TX USA

So, it's been a while since I created and posted an HDR image. Haven't found much to shoot in HDR and I got so much else to do. But tonight was the night. Although I'm a little disappointed because I thought I could do more with the full moon but that piece of rock up there is just too darn bright. Just look at the rays; there is just no way you can blend the moon into tonight's sky without special tricks. Ah well, it's not bad after all just not what I intended. Lesson learned. Y'all have a wonderful weekend. ### Explore ### Highest: #8 in interestingness - 6/12/2009 9:19 AM CDT

This is made of 5 shots; all HDR voodoo is PS4 and came out real nice. No overlays to correct a thing. Day 180 - Made a detour last night on the way to Torchy's Tacos to get a fisheye shot of the famous Plastic Pink Flamingos in Austin. I guess they culled the flock, because it seemed like there were less than usual. The sun was riding low in the late afternoon sky so I was able to get a little flare in there too. HCS! If you live in Austin and want a really good taco, get the Ace of Spades taco of the month at Torchy's. OMG!!

Saint Mary Cathedral, Austin, TX This was taken during the downtown Photowalk on Saturday. I've always loved the wonderful HDRs of the great European Churches and maybe someday I'll get back there. In the mean time, I'll explore the beautiful interiors closer to home. Did some research and found out that a Cathedral is where the Bishop, the head of the Catholic Dioceses, resides. This structure was started in 1872, which for Austin is quite old. Explore #274 | 12/17/2009

We decided it was worth going back again for the view and to show Travus the lake similar to his name (Lake Travis). Oasis restaurant in Travis County, over looking Lake Travis, in Austin, Texas.
