Ruined Carfloat Tracks, Point Richmond, CA

27 February 2011. Point Richmond, CA. For the first 84 years of the 20th century, the Santa Fe Railroad moved freight across the San Francisco Bay by barge. Railroad cars were decoupled from trains and loaded onto carfloat barges, which were pulled across the bay by a small fleet of tug boats, to be re-attached to trains at the other end. The service ended in 1984 when a fire destroyed the Point Richmond pier (the East Bay terminal for the operation). The Richmond carfloat terminal and the surrounding waterfront area have since been converted into parkland, but the ruins of the ferry slip remain, with the lift mechanism for the track apron largely intact. The 1984 fire consumed many of the wooden cross ties and pier supports, rendering the ferry slip effectively useless. This is the last dilapidated pier photo from this location I'll share with you, I promise. This one is a 90 second exposure (thanks to a 10-stop neutral density filter) and you can really see how it smoothed out pretty much everything and really let the red channel saturate. I'm really proud of how the D7000 performed here, this was at ISO 400 and it was hardly noisy at all. There were some hot pixels (which I may have missed a few trying to quickly clone them out).
