Athlone (Irish: Baile Átha Luain, meaning "town of the ford of Luan") lies on the River Shannon near the southern extremity of Lough Ree, Republic of Ireland. Athlone stands close to the geographical centre of Ireland, on the borders of two counties, Westmeath and Roscommon, two provinces, Connaught, and Leinster. Although the river forms the historic border between County Roscommon and County Westmeath, the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 included the town entirely in Westmeath. Athlone after the last census in 2006, now has (population 16,888) 22,000+ including environs, both Connaught and Leinster sides of the Shannon is also an important town in Westmeath. Latest census information gives Mullingar the county administrative centre, a (population 18,529), making it the largest town in county.
- Athlone Castle - great for history-lovers. Originally built for England's King John in 1210, it was twice besieged in the 17th century before finally being captured by the Williamites.

- The River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, runs through Athlone.
- A bronze bust of Count John McCormack, Athlone native and renowned singer, is located on the promenade in Athlone.

Came across this place when strolling around the backstreets of Athlone, Co. Westmeath. (Three photos stitched with Autostitch. I had to get rid of the usual telephone lines, tv aerials etc. with Photoshop) The place reminded me that the Irish used never be afraid to use colour to make their houses homes. Now the only colour we seem to know is beige. See

Tucked away down the steep and narrow Friary Lane in Athlone is the beautiful Franciscan Friary and St. Anthony's Church. Originally founded in 1240, the current friary was built in 1869. The church was built 1930. This is St. Francis and a child.
