Bandstand: Arnold Circus - Boundary Street Estate

How wonderful to see a bandstand in a street rather than a park, I love them especially when there's a brass band playing. The Boundry Street Estate is a housing development, formally opened in 1900, in the East End of London. It is situated in the north western corner of Bethnal Green. The estate, constructed from 1890, was one of the earliest social housing schemes, and was built by the London County Council as the world’s first council housing, replacing the Friars Mount slum in the Old Nichol. The demolition rubble was used to construct a mound in the middle of Arnold Circus at the centre of the development, housing a still extant bandstand. The estate consists of multi-story brick structures, surrounding the central mound. This bandstand, which was built in ca.1910 had been badly vandalised and the local authority restored it as part of a major redevelopment scheme.

The Boundary Estate is a housing development, formally opened in 1900, in the East End of London, England. It is situated in the north western corner of Bethnal Green in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and on the boundary with Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. The estate, constructed from 1890, was one of the earliest social housing schemes, and was built by the London County Council as the world's first council housing, replacing the Friars Mount slum in the Old Nichol. The model buildings of Arnold Circus were known as Stripeland and now they are listed Grade 2*. They replaced one of the worst slums in London - the Old Nichol also known as The Jago from Arthur Morrison's novel A Child of the Jago. Built from 1890 and opened in 1900, the rubble from the demolished slums was used to build the central mound which is landscaped as gardens with a bandstand. Unfortunately the tenants of the slum couldn't afford to live in the new buildings. Only 11 out of nearly 6,000 tenants werer rehoused here.

Arch. Owen Fleming / Housing of the Working Classes branch of the LCC. 1894-1900. View from bandstand down Calvert Avenue to Shoreditch High Street at end. One of the original design criteria was that “If a line is drawn from the sill of any window at an angle of 45º, it is clear of all obstruction from adjacent buildings”. The whole estate is now a conservation area. London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Arch. Owen Fleming / Housing of the Working Classes branch of the LCC. 1894-1900. The octagonal bandstand, 1899, forms the centre-point of the estate with roads radiating out from here. The Boundary Estate accommodation consists of 20 Grade II listed red-brick housing blocks — they were the first council houses ever built. The bandstand is also Grade II listed. London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

One of the Bristol Flickr people (I'm sorry, my memory for names is awful) had this, which was getting appraised by , prompting a short discussion about returning to the joys of film after a time with digital. Hmm. Unfortunately I know nothing about cameras this old. I'm hoping that people will come along and reduce my level of ignorance.

The very first council estate in the UK, built by the London County Council in 1900 on the site of one of London's most notorious slums, the Old Nichol, immortalised by Arthur Morrison as The Jago. Could never quite capture this with my old cam, a slightly wider lens does help a lot.

Broadcast 2000, who finished there set with an acoustic version of A-ha's Take On Me, with backing vocal accompaniment from the gathered crowd, in the dark. It was pretty special.

Arnold Circus on the Boundary Estate. This estate was the first council built estate and stands on the site of the notorious Old Nichol slum. The slum was Arthur Morrison's inspiration in his book A Child of the Jago

Vivian Girls There were way more people in attendance than previous Bandstand Busks, meaning I couldn't (...be arsed) to move around to get better viewpoints, and had to make do with where I was stood...
