They have been excavating this place for ages. Some old temples and LOADS of cats! Largo di Torre Argentina is a square in Rome, Italy, that hosts four Republican Roman temples, and the remains of Pompey's Theatre. It is located in the ancient Campus Martius. The name of the square comes from the Torre Argentina, which takes its name from the city of Strasbourg, whose original name was Argentoratum. In 1503, in fact, the Papal Master of Ceremonies Johannes Burckardt from Strasbourg built in via del Sudario a palace (now at number 44), called Casa del Burcardo, to which the tower is annexed. The other tower in the square is not the one giving the name to the place, but the Medieval Torre del Papitto (Little Pope's Tower), attributed by tradition to Antipope Anacletus II Pierleoni, allegedly not a tall person. After Italian unification, it was decided to reconstruct part of Rome (1909), demolishing the zone of Torre Argentina. During the works (1927), however, the colossal head and arms of a marble statue were discovered. The archeological investigation brought to light the presence of a holy area, dating to the Republican era, with four temples and part of Pompey's Theater. Julius Caesar was killed in the Curia of the Theatre of Pompey, and the spot he was believed to be assassinated is in the square. (Wikipedia)

Museo Nazionale Romano - Crypta Balbi The Inscription celebrates the restoration promoted by Pope Honorius IV Savelli in 1285. - is a copy of The National Museum of Rome (Museo Nazionale Romano in Italian) is a set of museums in Rome, Italy, split between various branches across the city. It was founded in 1889 and inaugurated in 1890, during the Risorgimento, with the aim of collecting antiquities from between the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD. Crypta Balbi In 1981, digging on a derelict city-centre site in the Campus Martius between the churches of Santa Caterina dei Funari and San Stanislao dei Polacchi, Daniel Manacorda and his team discovered the colonnaded quadriporticus of the Theatre of Lucius Cornelius Balbus, the nearby statio annonae and evidence of later, medieval occupation of the site. These are presented in this branch, inaugurated in 2001, which houses the archaeological remains and finds from that dig (including a stucco arch from the porticus). - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Museum_of_Rome Running Around Rome Day 7 September 6, 2009

Largo di Torre Argentina. Julius Caesar was killed on the steps of the Theatre of Pompey, and the spot he was believed to be assassinated is in the square. Between 1926 and 1929, the area between Via del Teatro Argentina, Via Florida and Corso Vittorio was flattened. The owners had hoped to build two luxury complexes. Before work had begun, five columns of the round temple were already visible in a courtyard adjacent to the church of S. Nicola de' Cesarini. The remains of a rectangular temple were also discernible. The project had to be abandoned. This likely explains why there are only two subway lines in Rome: Every time you dig in Rome you come across historical sites and the experts have to be called in and the work comes to a screeching halt because most of Rome's basement remains unexplored. Fascinating! (Don't you love that blue Roman sky and the umbrella pines?)

Roma, Itália. Trams In Rome There is a limited tram network in Rome that could be of interest to visitors. The hub of the tram system is Piazza Maggiore, a kilometre or two south of Termini near the old city walls. There is a lot of cheap accommodation stretching south of Termini Station where trams to Termini may be of everyday use to you. With the notable exception of Tram no 8 that terminates at Argentina, very close to Piazza Venezia in the very centre of Rome, the tram routes service the periphery of the central zone. You use the tram, exactly like the buses in terms of ticketing.

March 15, 44 BC, Julius Caesar was murdered near this spot. Stones in the foreground, within the area sacra in Rome, are the foundation of the Curia of Pompey. Caesar had strolled over to confer with some senators who then pulled out their knives and stabbed him. I did not see any knife-wielding senators when I visited, but you can never be too careful.
