Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI
Made by setholiver1
i would like to end this series by going back to the Vatican City during our Papal Audience vist at St. Peter's Square...we were able to go early that morning and got front row seats in the square and had to wait for 2 hours for the Pope's scheduled mass at the square...the place was packed with pilgrims and visitors from all over the world and when the Pope, riding on the Popemobile showed, there was this really loud celebratory and joyous cheer that erupted in the square...some were crying, some laughed, some were screaming, some waved, some were singing to the Pope...it was a totally fulfilling experience to see him this close...i just got up on my chair and started calling him and waving, yelling Hi Pope! Hi Pope! Hi Pope!!!!...i don't know why those words came out but that was what i was yelling...and i was shooting that camera non stop at the same time...it was for us both one of the highlights of this wonderful trip...hope you guys enjoyed the miniscule amount of images that i've shared with you...i would definitely be posting some more in the future but this would be the last in this series for now...GRAZIE!!!!! Pls and receive the blessings of our Pope!!!

The Vatican City State (The Holy See) is a sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a landlocked, almost completely walled, enclave within the city of Rome, Italy. The Vatican City can be said to be the world governmental capital of the Catholic Church. The Vatican City is itself of great cultural significance. Buildings such as St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel are home to some of the most beautiful art in the world, which includes works by artists such as Botticelli, Bernini and Michelangelo. The Vatican Library and the collections of the Vatican Museums are of the highest historical, scientific and cultural importance.

Michelangelo's Dome (2006-05-046)

Michelangelo's Dome (2006-05-046)
Made by Argenberg
Michelangelo's Dome of Basilica di San Pietro. Michelangelo's last great work, the Dome of St. Peter's, has a diameter of around 43 meters; it sits on four great arches that stand on four massive piers, each with a perimeter of 71 meters. When Michelangelo died, the drum was already in place with its 16 windows. Giacomo della Porta finished the work with the construction of the actual dome, raising it 10 meters so it now rests 136 meters above floor level. This deviation from the original design caused it to lose some of the round shape Michelangelo had planned. The mosaics were completed later, following designs by Cavalier d'Arpino.

Homework 2 : What irritates me ....

Homework 2 : What irritates me ....

St. John the Baptist appears in the place of Judas Iscariot. There eight statues shown in this image.

The white fence in the lower right made a turn to the left in front of me so I placed my camera in between the pickets and gathered this image of the little side dome and part of the Basilica's main dome. Il recinto bianco in basso a destra in una svolta a sinistra di fronte a me così ho messo la mia macchina fotografica tra i picchetti e le raccolte questa immagine della cupola lato piccolo e parte della cupola centrale della Basilica.

Some Simple Detail

Some Simple Detail

If you haven't guessed by now the amount of detail and excellent craftsmanship on everything in Vatican City is amazing. This is the canopy of some minor (at least it seemed it) entrance on the outside of the building. From my previous comments, you can tell I was awestruck with all of the art and attention to everything. Easily the most interesting place of the trip, but then it's hard to compare to anything else in the world.

St. Andrew, Jesus, St. Peter, and two others. These statues overlook the front of the basilica. If you buy a ticket to go up to the top of the dome, then you pass them on the way down (by the souvenir shop and cafe).
