Antalya (formerly known as Adalia; from Greek: Atta'leia Attlia) is the capital city of the Antalya Province, located on the Gulf of Antalya on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The population of the city is 603,190 (2000 census) but reaches up to 2 million in summers at the height of the tourist season. Situated on a steep cliff, Antalya is a picturesque city surrounded by mountains, forests, mediterranean sea and many ancient ruins; with one notable archaeological museum. Recent developments in tourism sector, starting in the 1970s, have transformed the city into an international resort centre. With its airport and central location, it is a gateway for Turkey's coastal resorts which earned it the title of "the capital of Turkish tourism".

Antalya is rich in history and art.

  • The old quarter, Kaleiçi, has narrow, winding streets enclosed in ancient city walls.
  • There's a great archaeology museum and plenty of historic buildings and ancient ruins nearby.

Hagia Sophia Hagia Sophia (Turkish: Ayasofya, Greek: Αγία Σοφία; Holy Wisdom, Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia) is a former patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It was the largest cathedral ever built in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Seville Cathedral in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between A.D. 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, and was in fact the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site (the previous two had both been destroyed by riots). It was designed by two architects, Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The Church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 50 foot (15 m) silver iconostasis. It was the patriarchal church of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the religious focal point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly 1000 years. In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and Sultan Mehmed II ordered the building to be converted into the Ayasofya Mosque. The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were removed, and many of the mosaics were eventually plastered over. The Islamic features — such as the mihrab, the minbar, and the four minarets outside — were added over the course of its history under the Ottomans. It remained as a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey. For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many of the Ottoman mosques such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul), the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, and the Rüstem Pasha Mosque. Although it is sometimes referred to as Saint Sophia (Greek for wisdom), the Greek name in full is Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, Church of the Holy Wisdom of God, and it was dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God rather than a specific saint named Sophia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia ********************************************************************************** This is a 3 exposure HDR image..

The arts that had been scaled down versions in 1/25 of their original size This is a 3 exposure HDR image.. ***************************************************************************************** Selimiye Mosque While conventional mosques were limited by a segmented interior, Sinan's effort at Edirne was a structure that made it possible to see the mihrab from any location within the mosque. Surrounded by four tall minarets in, the Mosque of Selim II has a grand dome atop it. Around the rest of the mosque were many additions: libraries, schools, hospices, baths, soup kitchens for the poor, markets, hospitals, and a cemetery. These annexes were aligned axially and grouped, if possible. In front of the mosque sits a rectangular court with an area equal to that of the mosque. The innovation however, comes not in the size of the building, but from the organization of its interior. The mihrab is pushed back into an apse-like alcove with a space with enough depth to allow for window illumination from three sides. This has the effect of making the tile panels of its lower walls sparkle with natural light. The amalgamation of the main hall forms a fused octagon with the dome-covered square. Formed by eight massive dome supports, the octagon, is pierced by four half dome covered corners of the square. The beauty resulting from the conformity of geometric shapes engulfed in each other was the culmination of Sinan's life long search for a unified interior space. At the Bulgarian siege of Edirne in 1913, the dome of the mosque was hit by Bulgarian artillery. Due to the dome's extremely sturdy construction, the mosque survived the assault with only minor damage. On Atatürk's order, it has not been restored since then, to serve as a warning for future generations. The damage can be seen at the photograph above, between the blue center circle and the dark red calligraph to its immediate left. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selimiye_Mosque

Antalya Marina ( Kaleiçi ) Antalya Yat Limanı There was the old harbour, now a marina, encircled by the city walls. The harbour scene looked quite different by morning and by evening, each as beautiful as the other, with the light slowly flashing at the end of the breakwater, the sailing boats of all shapes and sizes, and the palm trees and date palms along the waterfront. It is no wonder that King Attalos II of Pergamum declared this spot to be heaven on earth when he first came here. Antalya Port over the ramparts being built some 18 centuries ago, reaching said spot via wooden stairs being guests at the centuries' old mansions facing the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and turning their back to the macadam paved streets of the Old City. Düden Waterfalls are a group of waterfalls in the province of Antalya, Turkey. The waterfall, formed by the Düden River (one of the major rivers in southern Anatolia), is located 12 km north-east of Antalya; which ends, where the limpid waters of the Lower Düden Falls drop off a rocky cliff directly into the Mediterranean Sea in a dazzling show. Lower Düden waterfall (named also: Karpuzkaldıran waterfall) This waterfall is the highest as it is approx. 30 meters high and the water gushes down onto the massive rocks with great force. This waterfall is located in Antalya, near Lara, and can be reached with the old coast street as well. Antalya (formerly known as Adalia; from Pamphylian Greek: Αττάλεια Attália) is a city on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey. It is the capital city of Antalya Province. The population of the city is 603,190 (2000 census) but reaches up to two million in summers at the height of tourism season. Situated on a cliff over the Mediterranean, Antalya is surrounded by mountains. Developments in tourism, starting in the 1970s, have transformed the city into an international resort. With its airport and central location, Antalya is the capital of Turkish tourism, a gateway for the Turkish Riviera and many historical sites. Furthermore, with its palm-lined boulevards, its prize-winning marina, the unspoilt historical neighbourhood of Kaleiçi, and the modern developments along the coast, the city of Antalya is a major attraction in its own right. Antalya and its surroundings are a very important part of Turkish tourism. Antalya city corresponds to the lands of ancient Pamphylia to the east and Lycia to the west. Antalya has plenty of accommodation, a very hot climate and many places to visit both in and around the city, including traces of Lycian,Pamphylian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and cultures.

Sunset over Kaleici and the roman harbour

Sunset over Kaleici and the roman harbour
Made by Photos On The Road
Also known as Old Antalya, the small historic section called Kaleiçi (KAH-leh-ee-chee) at the center of the sprawling modern city was the Roman town, then the Byzantine, then the Seljuk Turkish, and finally the Ottoman Turkish town. The huge, modern city of Antalya didn't really start to appear until after World War II. Until then, Kaleiçi was Antalya, with its massive stone walls, meandering streets, and picturesque old houses built so close they often overshadow the narrow lanes. Kaleiçi surrounded and protected the old Roman harbor, which was Antalya's reason for being: even in Roman times, this was the outlet for the produce of the rich alluvial plain that stretches east from the city beneath the southern slopes of the Taurus Mountains. Today Kaleiçi is a protected district, with preservation of historic buildings required, and strict regulations on any new building. You will see some fairly ugly modern buildings in Kaleiçi, but they are being eliminated as the possibilities arise. www.photosontheroad.eu/phojoomla Follow me on Twitter: @photoontheroad

the hadrian's gate - üçkapılar

the hadrian's gate - üçkapılar
Made by Bazalai
The Hadrian's Gate (or Hadrianus Gate, or The Three Gates, or Üçkapılar; in Turkish) is a triumphal arch which was built in the name of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who visited Antalya in 130 A.D. It has three arched gates. According to the legend, Sultan Belkis, the Queen of Sheba, is said to have passed under those gates and enjoyed a happy day in the palace in Aspendos on her way to visit King Solomon. Formerly the city walls enclosed the outside of the gate and it was not used for many years. This may be the reason why it has not been harmed, and it was only revealed when the walls collapsed. It is considered as Pamphylia's most beautiful Gate. The upper part has three apertures in the shape of a cupola, and except for the pillars is built entirely of white marble. The ornamentation is very striking. The original gate was two storeys but little is known of the top storey. (wikipedia)

Turkey - Antalya - Old Town Panorama
Made by Darrell Godliman
Antalya was a short drive from Side (or a long one on a Thomas Cook coach trip) and it was worth the effort for it's picturesque Old Town centred around this lovely harbour. From Wikipedia : Kaleiçi, with its narrow cobbled streets of historic Ottoman era houses, is the old center of Antalya. With its hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, and shopping, it has been restored to retain much of its historical character; its restoration has won the Golden Apple Tourism Prize. Cumhuriyet Square, the main square of the city, is the location for temporary open air exhibitions and performances. The city also features sites with traces of Lycian, Pamphylian, and Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and cultures.

Turkish Tea while shopping in Antalya

Turkish Tea while shopping in Antalya
Made by Chennette
When you're trying to buy souvenirs (or trying NOT to buy) you get offered Turkish tea. Not different really from Indian teas, but grown in the North of Turkey and served in these lovely glass dishes. They brought out little stools for us to sit and sip tea. All through the city you can see people ferrying covered trays of tea between shops to lure/entice/treat the tourists. Or maybe it's just a nice hospitable tradition. The owner of this shop wasn't particularly pushy or otherwise objectionable. And actually knew where the Caribbean was, as he is an avid yachtie, even though only within the Mediterranean, as he dreams of heading out to sea to other places.

Best kitty portrait yet

We ate at a restaurant this morning, and this little princess came to join us. Never in my entire life have I seen a case of feline heterochromia where there wasn't a blue eye involved, nor have I ever seen it in a cat that wasn't primarily white. However, I looked it up when I got home, and apparently there are some cases where heterochromia can affect cats with green eyes. The eye that doesn't get the full pigmentation turns out either honey-coloured or gold. The book says that even green-eyed heterochromic cats should be mostly white, but clearly there are exceptions. She wasn't particularly friendly until the breakfast arrived at the table.

Okay, if you guys don't like this one, then I give up, because Duckie and I tried our absolute best to get it right. He did most of the work; I just showed up at the right time. I really, really love this photo. I actually gasped when I first saw it, because I never thought of myself as the kind of person who could nail a shot that required any kind of timing skill. I usually take photos of things that hold still. ETA: informs me that the duck has been named Floyd, so we shall all refer to him as such from now on. Thank you for your cooperation. This here is what you call luck. Little Turkish girl, cute as a button, hint of a smile, striking blue-green eyes, homemade haircut, corn on the cob eaten in a completely random fashion, way too big sweatshirt with classic Turklish writing on the front (it says high football sports legendary CE league), and the kicker: a hole in the canopy cover that lets sunlight stream through in exactly the right spot. What else could you possibly ask for? Aside from a better lens and a decent photographer, I mean. [This photo made Explore #398 on 3 October 2008]
