Crossing The Severn
Made by Cayusa
Week 113 Assignment 2 for . Bridge - Bridges are pretty amazing structures. Find an interesting one and photograph it in an interesting way. Please no hey, there's a bridge, let's snap a quick shot through the windshield while we're driving submissions please. :-) I didn't manage to get a shot of the Bay Bridge tonight. The spots that I could gain access to weren't close enough with the rain, fog and clouds that we had tonight. I was a bit disappointed in this, but there wasn't anything I could do about it. I have a few more spots that I know I can get access to, but not late at night. I'm down in Annapolis enough that I'll have other opportunities. Hopefully the next time I'm down there it will be a nicer day / night than what we were treated to today. While down there, I figured I'd drive around to see if I could find any other bridges to shoot. I managed to find a spot next to the Severn River Inn and while I probably shouldn't have been there, nobody came by to complain. There is an old pier there as well that I didn't know was there that I'll bet would look pretty cool during a sunset. I'm definitely going to have to swing by this spot again. Alternate shot

To The Left
Made by George L Smyth
I remember many years ago listening to a coworker tell me that she had camped out in the desert. She spent a lot of time looking at the stars and wished that she knew how to take pictures of the star trails. I could have explained that to her. The problem was that she had purchased a camera that was the latest and greatest, and did everything for her - except give her knowledge. Perhaps the reason I’ve enjoyed the low tech for so long is that it is limiting, and requires one to build a set of knowledge before being able to squeeze as much out as possible. One of these low tech devices is my trusty Holga camera, with two shutter speeds and three aperture possibilities. Such limitations forces one to work with what they’ve got and that’s what I did in this picture. I had a roll of Konica Infrared film, which I normally shoot at EI 8 when metered through a #25 (red) filter. Such a slow film speed means that just about the only way to use it within the Holga is to make multiple exposures (I could use the Bulb setting) , and in this image of the old Annapolis Market House (now, unfortunately, refurbished) I waited for people to cross the street before taking the multiple exposures.

The Birthday Girl
Made by Cayusa
Today my little girl turned seven. I can't believe that she is seven already. It doesn't seem that long ago that she was an infant. Now, she starts second grade in a little over a week. Why do they grow up so fast?!?!?! As shell shocked as I am over her turning seven way before I was ready, I'm so proud of the little lady she has become. She had herself quite the day. I took a half day at work so I could get to my mom and dad's house and celebrate her actual birthday with her. She was very excited that Kathy and I were there for the afternoon. My mom took her swimming and afterward she got to go biking. Then it was a dinner of her choosing (spaghetti) and a cake that was not only really tasty, but was made by her and my mother. We are celebrating her birthday on Sunday with her friends, but she still got a few gifts tonight. She was really excited about her two new Webkinz and the Disney Princesses bike equipment she got. All in all, she had a great day and that is what it is all about.

some days...

This idea had been stuck in my head ALLLLL day since a couple minutes after I woke up this morning Unfortunately, this idea required that it be dim if not dark outside Basically, I sat around all day waiting for dusk to set in so that I could take this picture I than got a punch right in the crotch when it wasn't coming out the way I wanted It wasn't BAD, it just wasn't what I wanted Oh well You can't get everything you want in life.. Nikon d5000 | 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 | ISO 100 | 26mm | f/11 | 1/200 Strobist info in the comments OMGZ the new photo page layout is the bomb! Theres even a little zoom button that enlarges the pic and puts it on a dark background, eliminating the need for me to add View on Black links But for you who are stubborn and don't want to conform to the new page, I'm gonna continue to put them in the comment box until they make the change official :)

Frozen Annapolis Harbor
Made by George L Smyth
Bromoil requires three steps in the creative process of producing an image. The first step is to create a negative, the second is to create a print from that negative, and the third is to bleach the print and replace the removed silver with ink. Although the process pushes one in a particular direction, it does give one some additional freedom. In this particular case I gave emphasis to the sun and the boat, which was frozen in the ice. The original print has no practical detail in the shadow areas, which makes sense since I was shooting into the sun and capturing silhouettes. However, since Bromoil offers a grainy, ethereal effect, this lack of detail does not result in large black globs that distract from the subject at hand. glsmyth.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/frozen-annapolis-harbor/.

I walk alone
Made by chardeenly
Dear flickr, Oh flickr how I've neglected you! Unfortunately, my return is short lived because I'm going on another biking trip on Friday! Yay! I hope you can find it somewhere in your heart to forgive me Even if you don't, what can you do??? You're just a website :P -sincerely Charles Anyways, I felt especially guilty today for not uploading anything for weeks so I walked across the street to make myself feel better It was pretty annoying cuz cars kept on coming down the hill or up the street or around the corner and I had to dash to my camera to keep them from crushing it like how my spirit was crushed when I saw the ending to The Sopranos when it just went and cut out midsent- Nikon d5000 | 50mm 1:1.8 | ISO 100 | 50mm | f/1.8 | 1/320

JFK's Yacht Manitou
Made by Mr. T in DC
When I saw this yawl from a distance, its classic lines and fine woodwork stood out from the crowd of modern fiberglass powerboats. I knew it was special, so I ran over and took a couple of photos. It was the 62' long Manitou, the floating White House of John F. Kennedy! It was built in 1937 of mahogany and teak, with butternut interiors, for James Lowe of Chicago. It was donated to the Coast Guard, then Kennedy used it as Presidential yacht, and later it fell into private hands and was recently up for sale. Too bad it didn't end up in the collection of the Kennedy Library, it would make a beautiful exhibit. None of the tourists in Annapolis were paying her much attention, which is a shame, even without the Presidential pedigree.

Dinghy at Sunrise
Made by I♥RainyDays
This was taken at the city dock in Annapolis, Maryland slightly before sunrise when the sky had this awesome glow. There is much more to this story. The name of the large sailboat to which this dinghy is tied is When & If which is the quintessential Alden-designed schooner, built by FF Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine for Colonel and Mrs. George S. Patton. She was launched in 1939 and the Pattons planned to sail her around the world when and if Patton returned from the war that he saw looming in Europe. Patton, by then a General, was killed in a freak accident shortly after the end of the war and the vessel was sailed by Mrs. Patton for some years.

Snowy Annapolis!
Made by chardeenly
Went downtown tonight because its snowing! My hands were soooooooooooooo cold! I couldnt even feel when the shutter button was halfway down to focus because my hands were so cold! But I eventully settled on using the middle of my finger, which I could still barely feel, to focus the camera. I cant imagine what life was like for photographers before the amazing invention of autofocusing cameras with accurate light meters. Photographers are so spoiled these days... Camera: Nikon d5000 Lens: AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Focal Length: 35.0mm Shutter Speed: 4th picture on lower right, 1/125s; 1st, 2nd and 3rd pictures, 1/60s Aperture: f/1.8 ISO: 400

I've been doing lots of dramatic lit self-portraits lately My river of ideas has been dried up The strings on my guitar of imagination have broken The little gears inside my head have been jammed by a evil banana peel I dont know what to do :( This is probably is the last upload of mine for awhile Im going on a trip down to Alabama and than Florida to visit friends for about 2 weeks and I dont know if I'll have access to a computer or not If I die, please remember me as a kind and funny person :) Nikon d5000 | 35mm 1:1.8 | ISO 100 | 35mm | f/4 | 1/200 Strobist info in the comments

flourish by your own means...

I got back from florida and my dad had surprised me with a new lens! A 50mm 1.8! :) sure it doesnt autofocus with my camera but I think learning how to focus manually gives a greater sense of composition than autofocus does And its about 3 and a half times cheaper than the AF-S 50mm 1.4! But im super happy with it! Its the cheapest lens that nikon makes but its one of their sharpest Ahh but I can only dream of ever owning the king :( Nikon d5000 | 50mm 1:1.8 | ISO 100 | 50mm | f/1.8 1/400

solitary...
Made by chardeenly
Do you ever get the feeling that you're alone, that nobody knows you, how you feel? Like the light is green go everyone else but its red for you? Like all you ever wanted was to feel like you're a part of something, but all you know is how to feel alone? I have Im still trying to figure out how to use this new lens to its full potential Im still getting used to the manual focus. Just setting up the focus for this shot was a pain I guess I just gotta learn how to deal with it though Nikon d5000 | 50mm 1:1.8 | ISO 100 | 50mm | f/1.8 | 1/60

Why?
Made by chardeenly
Oops, I totally forgot to take a strobist info pic :( sb-600 @ 1/8 @ 85mm snooted through a piece of paper and bounced off of the ceiling and wall to the right of the camera Triggered via Cactus v4's The paper diffuses some of the light onto the side of my face and the the snoot shape directs the rest of the light towards the ceiling to create the back light and a little bit of fill on the other side of me Question marks seem to tickle my fancy lately I don't know why Nikon d5000 | 35mm 1:1.8 | ISO 100 | 35mm | f/1.8 | 1/25

Early November Sunrise
Made by I♥RainyDays
Just before sunrise in early November, Annapolis harbor begins to enlighten. Hopes for the late season sailors Heading south for the winter brighten. They know each other as cruisers and By the name of their liveaboard sailboat Not last names nor worldly occupations Their previous life--just a forgotten footnote. A cruisers life is simple by choice. No lawn to mow nor costly car repair. No debt, no bills, nor appointments. Just off to see the next new somewhere. (EXPLORE - November 1, 2008)

Sleep is Precious

Slightly out of focus :( My remote wouldn't work because I was too far away (the lens was zoomed all the way to 200mm) I don't think it's too noticeable though Maybe you didn't even notice before you read this It's good to be thorough Some people just skim and don't read everything IM EATING A BANANA! If you're just starting to read this, shame on you! (see beginning of description, where you should have started) Nikon d5000 | 55-200mm 1:4.5-5.6 | ISO 100 | 200mm | f/5.6 | 1/15

Why Are Self Portraits So Hard For Me?
Made by chardeenly
Self portraits tend to raise a couple problems for me. Im not the hottest dude in the world so no screaming girls fainting when they see me (darn). I have no external flashes (mainly because I cant afford them) so no crazy lighting effects that would draw most of the attention away from my looks and drive it somehow towards my creativity. And Im not creative enough to do any selfie with enough character to make it stand out. *Sigh* I guess I just wasnt born to do them

I dream, I thrive
Made by chardeenly
This is the result of boredom (as is most of my photography) Thought I take a shot at some levitation! Its not all that hard to do Step one: take a picture laying on the table Step two: take a picture without you or the table there Step three: layer the picture with you and the table in it over the second picture and erase the table Step four: realize that there's probably a better way to do it Nikon d5000 | 50mm 1:1.8 | ISO 100 | 50mm | f/1.8 | 1/60
