homeless in Beijing # 1

homeless in Beijing # 1
Made by china.sixty4
A 'homeless man' sleeps on the sidewalk under a freeway overpass in the center of Beijing. Homelessness in Beijing, like in any developed city is a major problem. This has recently become more of a concern to Human Rights groups across the world because of the Central Governments policy of clearing and demolishing houses (many of which are 100's of years old) to make way for development for the 2008 Olympics. Leaving hundreds of thousands of Chinese people homeless and frequently without sufficient compensation. It is estimated that the games will cost China $20bn, making it the most expensive Olympics ever, The Olympics in Beijing is going to be one of the biggest examples of a totalitarian regime taking away people’s possessions in the name of self-glorification. Remarkably, for a country with little free speech, the protests are getting louder. Evicted people have been lighting themselves on fire in Tiananmen Square, and petitions and anonymous internet protests have been multiplying. Despite the imprisonment of Ye Guozhu – a housing rights activist who was imprisoned after applying for permission to hold a mass protest against the forced evictions – there are some flickers of progress. The government has issued a series of promises and reforms. Only time will tell if these reforms materialize or are just empty promises to satisfy the ever growing numbers of angry voices.

Join me on Google+ Type L for the large view. The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) (simplified Chinese: 国家大剧院; literally: National Grand Theatre), and colloquially described as The Egg, is an opera house in Beijing, People's Republic of China. The Centre, an ellipsoid dome of titanium and glass surrounded by an artificial lake, seats 5,452 people in three halls and is almost 12,000 m² in size. It was designed by French architect Paul Andreu. Construction started in December 2001 and the inaugural concert was held in December 2007 (source: Wikipedia) My Dear Friends, I am back from Beijing, unfortunately I did not have much time for blue hour photography. I managed to get that one, as well as a shot of the Olympic Stadium which will follow. I will try to catch up with your streams before I fly to another destination next week! :-)

The Chinese Mothership

The Chinese Mothership
Made by Stuck in Customs
Look at this magical place in Beijing... it's on the edge of belief. I could hardly fathom the nature of this place. I expected the lights to appear on the grid with melodic tones a mystical, alien language, like in Close Encounters. But none of that happened... So I just stood there for a long time, thinking about how incredible this place was... and took my time, setting up my system for a fitting photograph. Remember when we were kids, and we never finished our food, even under the threat of starving children in China? Now, I say to my kids, you better eat your food, or else Chinese children will grow up and create an economic powerhouse. Well too late for that! This is the amazing National Centre for the Performing Arts, or as I like to say, the 国家大剧院 -- I find that rolls of the tongue a bit easier. from the blog www.stuckincustoms.com

Ceiling of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests

Ceiling of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests
Made by f0rbe5
The ceiling of the major building in the Temple of Heaven complex, Beijing. It appears to have been freshly painted shortly before our visit as it was bright and stunning. The Temple of Heaven, literally the Altar of Heaven in traditional Chinese. Construction of the complex began in 1420, and was thereafter visited by all subsequent Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, seen above, is a magnificent triple-gabled circular building, built on three levels of marble stone base, where the Emperor prayed for good harvests. The Temple of Heaven was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is 32m in diameter and 38m tall. It has four inner, 12 middle and 12 outer pillars, representing the four seasons, 12 months and 12 traditional Chinese hours respectively. A wooden building, it was built without a single nail.

Hall of Supreme Harmony, Forbidden City, Beijing. 北京故宫 太和殿 The Forbidden City, or the Former Palace in Mandarin, was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It is located in the middle of Beijing, China, and now houses the Palace Museum. For five centuries it served as the home of the emperors of China. Built from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings with 8,707 rooms and covers a total of 720,000 m2 (7,800,000 sq ft). The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

Egg-cellent Building

OK, so I know I have a few photos of this building already, but given the conditions last night, I had no choice but to go back. There was a little wind about, but over 30S, the water surrounding the egg smoothed out nicely. Initially, I planned to go to the outer edge of the forbidden city (again) to get some night shots, but all lights were off.... This was nearby, and an old favourite... Personally, I think my best in this location. The egg is the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing. A relatively new, and modern structure, surrounded by Beijings oldest government buildings, and the forbidden city.... Little post processed used. Taken in RAW, a slight straighten & the usual RAW settings required. Canon 5DMKII | Canon 17-40L | 19mm | f/16 | 30 Sec | ISO 320 | Tripod

Xihuashi Street (喜华士街) I should have grabbed a business card from this place. Before our second massage of the trip - not that kind of massage - we stopped off at this swanky little swish slinger for a sip. A double shot of whiskey, a Tom Collins and an apple martini for the equivalent of 60,000 won (don't ask about the martini...). The drinks were cold, the bartenders fluent in English and there were only two hookers at the end of the bar trying to sell us their wares. A more subdued, refined night in Beijing is never to be had. Han Suyin, Beijing, 1977

Han Suyin, Beijing, 1977
Made by David Stephensen
Our tour leader spotted one of her idols, Han Suyin, the famous novelist, in the dining room of the Beijing Hotel. She graciously let herself be photographed. I did not have much of a conversation with her, but my impression was of a wise person with a lot of stillness. Some Han Suyin quotes: Truth, like surgery, may hurt, but it cures. There is nothing stronger in the world than gentleness. . . . love from one being to another can only be that two solitudes come nearer, recognize and protect and comfort each other. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_Suyin 35 mm slide scan by Oscans bulk photo scanning

Poached Egg

After visiting The Egg several weeks ago, I decided that a return visit was needed at dusk (last time was night already). Personally, I think this one is my favourite. The Egg, is officially known as the National Centre for Performing Arts. This image is NOT HDR, it is a long exposure taken with my trusty B+W 110 3.0 (10 Stop) filter. Canon 40D | Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm | f13 | 202 Sec | ISO100 Little processing has been done, apart from a slight crop on the right, and some noise reduction in the sky. The colour comes from a combination of the dusky sky, and the slight colour cast given by the filter. It was a very windy day, and I was very happy with how the water smoothed out!

Teardrop

On one of the tours we took in Beijing we got the chance to visit a family living in the Hutong. It was nice to see a Hutong home from the inside and get a chance to talk to the family. Some how we ended up talking about the May 12, 2008 earthquake (Wenchuan earthquake). It was a terribly scary time for them as they had now way of knowing if their family living in that region was ok. When we went to say goodbye I asked for a picture, only after did i notice the teardrop. I went for this one with her eyes shut as it showed more emotion. View large it's better

Entering the Forbidden City

Entering the Forbidden City
Made by Stuck in Customs
The Forbidden City sits in the middle of Beijing along an imaginary line called The Central Axis. Many of the important buildings, temples, and monuments are along this line. It might seem convenient just to walk along this line to see everything you need to see, but this idea only works if you have the mobility of the Genghis Khan cavalry. I had a delightful tea inside the Forbidden City at a secluded and secret tea house with my contacts. It all sounds somewhat cloak & dagger, doesn't it? Read about it here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

The Sun and the Moon

Ok, so the title is't 100% fitting, as you can't actually see the sun itself.... But I've been to this place before and can't call it anything egg related again....... Finally managed to get out with my camera, albeit for about 30 mins when the conditions looked good.... Taken in Beijing, at the National Centre for Performing Arts - otherwise known as the egg - there's a few others of this place in my photostream somewhere.... If you look on top of the building, there is actually a guy walking across it, he's a member of the cleaning team, the rest were abseiling over the other side somewhere!

Back in the West, but here's a shot i took this weekend in Beijing. I made the most of a rare clear sky to take a shot of the futuristic Beijing Opera building, officially called National Centre for the Performing Arts (or National Grand Theatre in Chinese 国家大剧院). You enter the building by an hallway that goes underneath the artificial lake that surrounds it. And it's no surprise that the locals call it The Egg! I'm in Beijing for the 7th time or so and pretty much saw everything cultural around here. So I went to see that crazy cool new stadium! But they don't let anyone in yet. There's three gates with guards, and they have to scream at people all the time who try to get in too far for a decent picture. So this was the best I could do, for now. I'll try to score some pics of that crazy cool new CCTV tower in the next days. I'm always posting pictures and videos on my blog in high res, be sure to check it out! Explored: 2008-04-18 #433

The Nine Dragon Screen

The Nine Dragon Screen
Made by T e e J e
Facing the Gate of Imperial Supremacy is the famous Nine Dragon Screen, the biggest in China. It was built in 1771 during the reign of Qing Emperor QianLong. Until recently, there were altogether three Nine Dragon Screens in China. The oldest one is located in Datong city, Shanxi Province; it was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The third was built in Beihai Park during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), which is within walking distance from the Forbidden City. The Nine Dragon Screen is 6 metres high and 31 metres long. It is constructed with 270 glazed tiles.

My first attempt at a High definition range image. Made up of 5 different exposure images and put together with photomatix This is the courtyard of the hostel Sarah and I are staying in at the moment (Beijing), today it is chucking it down with rain so we've not moved much! Its in one of the remaining Hutong areas which one by one are being leveled to make way for newer buildings. Hopefully some will be kept as this is where the real character of Beijing can be found.
