Amsterdams Historisch Museum Drieluik met de aanbidding der koningen, 1517 Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen (ca. 1472 - 1533) olieverf op doek, 83 x 56 cm inv.nr. SB 6410 AHM zaal 3 wand Trefwoorden bijbelse voorstelling, portret, familieportret Heereman, Vanolles, Zeller, Baerland, Maria, St. Hieronymus, St. Catharina, St. Christoffel, St. Anthonius Tegen een classicistische achtergrond zijn wij getuige van de Aanbidding der Koningen. Op de zijluiken is de aandacht van een kinderrijk gezin gericht op de bijbelse voorstelling in het midden. De traditionele drieluikvorm van het kunstwerk onderstreept de symbolische afstand tussen de geportretteerde personen en de afgebeelde scène. Het linkerluik biedt plaats aan de vader met zes zonen, het rechterluik aan de moeder met zes dochters. De doodshempjes van een dochter en een zoon wijzen erop dat zij dood werden geboren. Recent onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat het hier gaat om het tweede gezin van de Amsterdamse apotheker Claes Bouwenszn Cat (overleden 1536) en zijn vrouw Volckgen Jansdr (voor 1489–1551). Ook een zoon en diens vrouw uit een eerder huwelijk zijn afgebeeld. Cat bestelde het drieluik bij Jacob Corneliszn voor gebruik op het familie-altaar, mogelijk in de Nieuwe Kerk.

Amsterdams Historisch Museum De Noorderkerk in de winter, ca. 1665 Abraham Beerstraaten (1639 - 1665) olieverf op doek, 93 x 125 inv.nr. SA 644 AHM zaal 10 wand Stadsbouwmeester Hendrick Jacobsz Staets (1558–1631) voltooide in 1623 de Noorderkerk. De ontwerper, Hendrick de Keyser (1565–1621), was twee jaar daarvoor gestorven. De stadsuitbreiding in het eerste kwart van de 17de eeuw stimuleerde de bouw van een aantal nieuwe kerken in de nieuwe grachtengordel en in de Jordaan. De Noorderkerk was het eerste kerkgebouw in Amsterdam waarvan de architectuur volledig werd afgestemd op de protestantse eredienst. Daarin staat de preek, en dus de preekstoel, centraal. Abraham Beerstraten was een specialist op het gebied van stadsgezichten. Zijn winterimpressie toont het ijsvermaak op de Prinsengracht, ter hoogte van de Anjeliersgracht (na demping in 1861 Westerstraat geheten). Een vrouw op het ijs verkoopt mosselen; rechts zijn mannen aan het dobbelen.

Een vloot van de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie voor de kust van West-Afrika, 1608 Adam Willaerts (1577 - 1664) olieverf op doek, 94,5 x 214,5 cm inv.nr. SA 25825 AHM zaal 5 VOC De vloot telde zes schepen uit Amsterdam, drie uit Zeeland, twee uit Rotterdam, een uit Delft en een uit Enkhuizen. Vermoedelijk is dit de vloot van Pieter Willemsz. Verhoeff, die op 22 december 1607 uitzeilde naar Azië. De schepen lagen van 15 mei tot 2 juni bij St. Helena, waar men water en vers voedsel innam. Dit was dringend nodig omdat er scheurbuik was uitgebroken onder de ca. 1800 koppen tellende bemanning. Tot de wapenstilstand van 1609 was Nederland in oorlog met Spanje en Portugal. In juli en augustus 1608 voerde de vloot operaties uit tegen de Portugezen in Mozambique. In de tweede helft van september beschoten de schepen Goa, hoofdplaats van het Portugese rijk in Azië.

I had never seen this before in Amsterdam. In the courtyard of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum there's a corner with a lot of small cabinets. They belonged to the poor and homeless boys who could store their tools in the cabinets. They would get an education as a workman and would then leave the premises.

Frankly, the historic museum of Amsterdam is pretty boring. I like history, but if you are going to tell it with the help of oil paintings only, I'll give up after 4-5 rooms. Anyway, I really like the displays in the entrance hall.
