Hamburg's old Elbe Tunnel (Elbtunnel) is 426.5 m (1,400 ft) long. 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, it connects central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. It is the first river tunnel on the European continent, which was a technical sensation at its opening in September 1911. Since 2003 the tunnel is under preservation order. Der Alte Elbtunnel ist 426,5 Meter lang. 24 Meter unter der Oberfläche, verbindet er die Innenstadt bei den St.-Pauli-Landungsbrücken mit den Docks und Schiffswerften in Steinwerder. Er ist der erste Flusstunnel auf dem europäischen Festland und galt bei seiner Eröffnung am 7. September 1911 als technische Sensation. Seit 2003 steht das Bauwerk unter Denkmalschutz.

The tunnel was built in 1911 below river Elbe in Hamburg. To pass the tunnel, vehicles are brought down by elevators. Nowadays it is rarely used since a new tunnel provides 4 tubes with 8 lanes.
