Aleppo
Aleppo (or Halab Arabic: hkl+b+", 36°13'N 37°10'E) is a city in northern Syria, capital of the Aleppo Governorate. The city has a population of around 1.9 million, making it the second largest city in the country after Damascus. It is one of the oldest cities in the region, known to antiquity as Khalpe, to the Greeks as Beroea, and to the Turks as Halep, and it occupies a strategic trading point midway between the sea and the Euphrates; initially, it was built on a small group of hills in a wide fertile valley on both sides of the river Quweiq. The province or governorate extends around the city for over 16,000 km² and has around 3.7 million inhabitants. The name Halab means "gave out milk," coming from the ancient tradition that Abraham gave milk to travelers as they moved throughout the region. The colour of his cows was ashen (Arab. shaheb), therefore the city is also called "Halab ash-Shahba'" (he milked the ash-coloured). It was an old fortress used by the crusaders and many other of the conquerers of Aleppo. There are tours daily.
The Suk: There are multiple suks (pronounced souq) in the city including a covered section. All of the shopping you could want to do from gold and silver, boxes, clothing, fabric and soaps can be found in the various suks. Bargaining is encouraged and if you know Arabic it will get you a much better price.
San Sebastion: Located 30 miles outside of Aleppo this is an old church that was dedicated to a Monk who used to pray there. This church was built and became a monastery. There are guided tours. The grounds are beautiful and it is nice to get away from the city for a day.
The great Mosque: There are many mosques in the city but this is the largest and most ornate.
Any amount of time spent walking around the city will reveal a historical site or point of interest. There are some many pieces of history in the city it is impossible to see it all but also impossible to walk around and not come across a famous gate or ruin. Also check out the Christian section of the city to see a different part of Aleppo.
