Alcântara

Alcântara
Made by pedro vidigal
View Large On Black Although today it is quite central, it was once a mere suburb of Lisbon, comprising mostly farms and palaces. In the 16th century, there was a brook there which the nobles used to promenade in their boats. Through the late 19th century, Alcântara became a popular industrial area, with lots of small factories and warehouses. Through the centuries, this area has lost all of its charm and old buildings, as well as its brook, and the womenfolk used to go there to do their laundry. Around the early 1990s, Alcântara started to become a place for pubs and discotheques, mainly because its outer area is mostly commercial, and the noise generated at night, and the movida, would not disturb its residents. Today, some of this areas are slowly being taken over by loft developments and new apartments that can profit from its excellent river views and central locality.

stolen waters

stolen waters
Made by ChromaticOrb
The Portuguese name for an attic with windows opening to the roof is águas furtadas, which directly translates to English as stolen waters. The name comes from the fact that these windows reduce the roof area which is also called águas. (Thanks to and Rui Fernandes for the explanation). Anyway, this is a good example of how complementary colors (blue and yellow) work very well toghether. Had to darken the shadows a bit to reduce grays and greens and deliver some more contrast. Although the subject itself isn't very interesting, I think the overall image is quite well balanced.

Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. These fish hang out by the pier restaurants and just aimlessly swim around, waiting for something to drop from the sky. I kept throwing bread crumbs out into the dock. Later, the seagulls came and expected some food, too. The seagulls aren't as picky as the fish when it comes to what type of food we throw in the water. The fish solely feed on bread, while the seagulls are pleased with anything, from bread to spaghetti to sausage to cheese. I like everything, though, so I coveted most of the meal. *is unashamed!*
