Choir Enclosure Screens
Made by Aidan McRae Thomson
Albi Cathedral is one of the most unique, awe-inspiring churches ever concieved, quite simply one of the wonders of the medieval world. Although contemporary with the great gothic cathedrals of Northern France, this largely 13th century structure is radically different, being constructed almost entirely of brick and built like a mighty fortress; mostly unadorned walls rise uninterrupted from the ground like sheer cliff-faces of brick. The simplicity of the design gives it an almost modern appearance, and it's massive scale exudes a quite overpowering presence. The cathedral's powerful fortified appearance is largely down to two factors, the form of the building is consistent with local forms of gothic churches in southern France and northern Spain, whilst thr fortified solidity can be associated with the supression of the Cathars in this area during the Albigensian Crusades, the building serving as a lesson in strength and permanence as a warning to any rebellious locals. The plain exterior was relieved in the more stable climate of the 16th century by the huge flamboyant porch on the south side of the nave, more like an enormous spikey canopy open on three sides. It remains the main entrance to the cathedral, the base of the enormous tower being so massively constructed as to leave no room for a traditional west entrance. On entering this vast edifice one's senses are overwhelmed yet again, this time by the profusion of decoration in the cavernous interior. The walls and ceilings are entirely covered by frescoes dating from the early 16th century, mostly in Renaissance style, much of it colourful geometric patterns. The most memorable sections are the earliest frescoes at the west end from an enormous Last Judgement; the central section was sadly removed in the 18th century but the extensive and graphic depiction of the torments of Hell remains. In addition this cathedral is rare in preserving it's 'jube' or choir screen), a late medieval masterpiece of decoration and sculpture which extends into a lavishly sculpted choir enclosure adorned with a riot of angels and saints. All in all this unforgettable cathedral is a monument that defies description alone and bombards the senses!

The damage

27th of May 2011 Circuit d'Albi After our fatal lap around the circuit, the mechanics checked the alignment of the wheels. In the second picture you see the actual visable damage, it isn't that bad luckily although we definitely had rather not had it at all ofcourse. In the third picture the wheel is removed and in the last picture the mechanic is checking the internal damage and he found something that looked bent and the decision fell, it wasn't safe to drive any further! :S We could get a ride to Barcelona with the crew, the party with David Guetta was amazing!! In Barcelona there weren't any great cars for us to rend, so we drove in a Skoda Octavia to Monaco, chilling and listening to the radio for a change! ;) We'll be renting something nice in Monaco this weekend.

Albi.....The Last Judgement
Made by keithhull
X If you have time looks better . The cathedral of Sainte Cecile dominates the city of Albi. Its exterior is plain red brick, quite fortress like. Its interior is far from plain it’s a feast of decoration of many mediums. It’s hard to ignore the huge fresco of the Last judgement that was made in the late fifteenth century. It’s pretty scary and most of frightened the congregations in the middle ages to death. THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT HAVE A GREAT DAY To see keithhull's Most Interesting Photos on Flickriver

I was trying to be a bit creative and took apart a couple of Polaroids I took, but did not come out well. I noticed that the peeled off upper layer, I think called mylar layer, looks like a very nice frame. So I took out some of my films shots from the cupboard and placed mylar layer on it and photographed it. Here is the effect of the manual picture processing. It is also a mix a techniques: film, polaroid and digital. How cool is that? (if you are interested let me know and can upload the frame and share). www.bartiservin.com

Tour de France
Made by torbreck
A July spent in england this year was a life half-lived. The rain was relentless and summer a cruel taunt. Meanwhile, just across the channel in southern France the sun was out and Lucy and I were riding around Mazamet and catching some of the Tour de France with Lawrie and Natalie. We got amazing access and were so close to the riders. This was inside the riders enclosure at the Tour de France with bikestyletours.com at the Albi time trial stage

We stayed 1 night on this aire in Albi - that's our van on the right of the picture. We went to see the Toulouse-Lautrec musuem just a few minutes walk from here. This was his birthplace and houses the biggest collections of his paintings - I was in heaven! Also a very nice small town to visit! Parking for the night was free. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albi

Meticulousness
Made by Jasen Robillard
On one of our breaks from the cathedral, we visited the Musee Toulouse-Lautrec, which is immediately next door. Toulouse-Lautrec is one of France's better know artists, perhaps most known for the poster art he created for the Moulin Rouge (among others). After touring the museum, we stepped out into the gardens where the groundskeeper was trimming the hedges.

Le pont vieux. The Old Bridge (Pont Vieux) is still in use today after almost a millennium of existence. Originally built in stone (in 1035), then clad with brick, it rests on 8 arches and is 151m long. In the 14th century, it was fortified, reinforced with a drawbridge and houses were built on the piers. source Wikipedia

Cathedral St-Cecile, Albi, France
Made by Nicolas*
Beautiful colors inside Ste-Cecile Cathedral in Albi, France. This cathedral took 200 years to build. Started in 1282 and finished, or maybe when they got sick of working on it, 1480. The detail inside is amazing. EVERYTHING is hand painted and hand carved. The organ is a masterpeice just by itself. See for the closeup

Last Judgment

Obviously, a poor photo. But the subject matter is just bizarre. According to The Rough Guide to Languedoc & Roussillon, this mural is replete with nasty devils carrying off teeth-gnashing souls to the inferno. Not something you'd see in a typical Reform synagogue, that's fo' sho'.

farewell Albi
Made by overthemoon
the day we arrived, Albi had just lost a rugby match, but the crowds were dressed in black and yellow and everyone seemed to be in a festive mood. I took this the next morning just before we left, the flags were still waving from many windows.
