Agadez

Agadez is the largest city in northern Niger, with a population of 78,289 (2001 census). It lies in the Sahara and is the capital of Aïr, one of the traditional Tuareg federations.

Agadez (1988 pop. 50,164)is located in the Aïr Massif of Niger in West Africa. Agadez is a trade center visited by Tuareg pastoral nomads. Leather and silver handicrafts are made. Tin, tungsten, uranium, and salt are mined nearby. Founded in the 11th century, Agadez developed because of its location on trans-Saharan caravan routes linking Egypt and Libya with the Lake Chad area. Agadez was held by the Mali empire during part of the 14th century, captured by the Songhai empire in 1515, and controlled by Bornu in the 17th cent. It remained a trade center until the late 19th cent. During much of this time it was a center of Islamic learning. The French occupied the town in the early 20th cent. Agadez has a 16th-century mosque and a school of mines.

The Grand Mosquee at Agadez

The Grand Mosquee at Agadez

The mud-brick minaret of the Grand Mosquee in the Agadez is arguably Niger's most famous landmark. Agadez, a small town on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, grew up as a trading town on the nomadic Tuareg trading routes, and camel caravans still pass through in their journeys across the desert to trade wares and collect supplies. Today it is also one of Niger's main tourist destinations, popular for the rambling mud-brick architecture of its old town, the dramatic Sudanese-style minaret of the Grand Mosquee, and as a launching-spot for adventure treks by camel or four-wheel-drive into the spectacular Aïr Mountains and the rolling dunes of the Tenere Desert. The Sudanese style, showcased most famously in Agadez's sister town of Timbuctou (Mali) and the UNESCO World Heritage Djenne Mosque (also Mali), similar architecture can be found across the Sahel, as far east as central Sudan and as far west as western Mali. The Grand Mosquee in Agadez has been there for centuries, although the current incarnation of the minaret dates to around the middle of the 19th century, and is about 5 stories high. Note: A photo of this building also graces the cover of some editions of the Lonely Planet- West Africa (not mine though...)

Minaret

Minaret
Made by More Altitude
Been revisting some old pics, and applying a little knowledge I've been acquiring with photoshop. Nothing fancy, but some shots I'd previously written off brush-up quite okay. This one's mostly just some adjusting of the levels curve and some selective saturation. Yes, the sky is the one that was there in the shot- my photoshop skills don't extend that far! You've seen the tower - it's the mud-brick minaret of the Grand Mosquee in Agadez, in Niger's desert north. I have to say I still adore this structure, it's just so unique and dramatic- so you'll have to forgive me if I post a few more like it in the future too. Well, it's my photostream. At the end of the day I don't much care if you forgive me or not... :oP December 2005. CM- When I took the shot, I really just wanted to capture and portray what I thought was a visually striking piece of architecture, and isolating it against the sky seemed a good way to do this. I wanted to communicate a sense of the exotic location and capture something that was really different to my usual daily life.
