Mortlock Library, 3rd Level - HDR
Made by Dale Allman
Taken in the Mortlock building, 3rd level, which is part of the State Library of South Australia on North Terrace, Adelaide. Had to ask at the information desk to get up there as it's not open to the public. Standard 3 shot exposure, then blended in Photomatix and a bit of USM in Photoshop. Enjoy - Canon 5D Mark2. - ISO 100, f11, 30 sec, 20mm. - Canon 17-40 f/4 L. - Tripod About Mortlock Library The Mortlock Wing was opened on 18 December 1884 as a Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery for the colony of South Australia with 23,000 books and a staff of three. Construction of the building took over 18 years to complete after the initial foundations were laid in 1866. The foundation stone was laid on 7 November 1879 by Sir William Jervois and the building was constructed by Brown and Thompson at a total cost of £43,897. The building is French Renaissance in style with a mansard roof. The walls are constructed of brick with Sydney freestone facings with decorations in the darker shade of Manoora stone. The interior has two galleries, the first supported by masonry columns, and the second by cast iron brackets. The balconies feature wrought iron balustrading ornamented with gold while the glass-domed roof allows the chamber to be lit with natural light. Two of the original gas sunburner lamps survive in the office space located on the second floor at the southern end. Restoration of the building occurred in 1985 as a Jubilee 150 project by Danvers Architects, consultant architect to the South Australian Department of Housing and Construction. The $1.5 million project was jointly funded by the government and the community. In honour of a substantial bequest from John Andrew Tennant Mortlock, the Libraries Board of South Australia resolved that a percentage of the South Australiana Collections would be housed in the wing and named the Mortlock Library of South Australiana in 1986.

Leroy the Little Red Robot - An Introduction
Made by biskitboy
One night recently I was out searching for the Ball of Light [http://www.flickr.com/photos/biskitboy/sets/72157622454865956/]. The Ball of Light had disappeared and I saw a small red flash out of the corner of my eye. When I looked back I noticed there was a little red robot! I couldn't believe my eyes. How on earth does a little red robot come from a Ball of Light. Now the little red robot started squeaking and bleeping and making all sorts of odd noises. But it seemed to notice that I was looking at it with a blank look of wonder, yet complete confusion. Next thing I knew there was a sharp pain in my ear, and I could understand what it was saying!!! It said hello earthling, my name is Leroy. Bloody hell! my name is Leroy, who are you?, so I filled him in quick smart! I am here on your planet as an observer (in a rather robotic voice), it is said that earthlings are not quite right. It is said that you treat your planet and things on it in the wrong way, that you do not treat others right. I must report back to my home planet on these matters, and you must document this for my leaders! What the hell, I don't have time for this carry on. So I told the little robot, Leroy, that I could not do it. you do not seem to understand earthling. I may look very little, red and cute, but if you do not do as I say your life will never be the same again. I have robot powers beyond your imagination, and you do not want to test me! So begins the adventures of Leroy the little red robot. It seems I have a new job, as if I didn't have enough on my plate with the Ball of Light! So it seems I have to help Leroy find the bad things he talks about, but I hope I can show him some wonderful things at the same time. I hope you will support me by following the adventures of Leroy the Little Red Robot.

Crap title I admit :P ! & also gotta admit that this is definitely not the ideal filter to use at that time but that's pretty much all i've then while chasing a quick sunset. really tricky to find a good foreground too when the beach has nothing but just bloody endless of seaweeds. well, less can be good.. at least it does make me work harder & smarter with what was presented to me :) anyway time to have a good rest for the nite as my head feels rather swell now (i'm referring to the big head btw lol!) Yeah I found a new photography spot yesterday! What made it exciting was its just less than 5 mins walk from my home in North Adelaide. My friend told me that I gotta go for a walk with my cam immediately even tho i felt like crap with still a bit of flu & fever hanging around. Anyway there were exceptionally more horses on the field yesterday and definitely a worth 5 mins stroll since it was such a beautiful & sunny day of 22 degree c considering we are pretty much right in the middle of a winter! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Horses in the Park Land of North Adelaide The Shot Standard 3 exposure shot (+2..0..-2 EV) in RAW taken handheld Camera :: Canon 5D Mark II Lens :: Canon EF 17-40mm F/4L USM Photomatix - Tonemapped generated HDR using Photoshop - Blended a 0 EV tonemapped hdr to correct some movement of the horse - Added 3 layer mask effect of 'curves' for different area of contrast - Added 1 layer mask effect of 'level' (reds) to lighten the horse head - Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (reds) to desaturate the horse - Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (yellows) to desaturate the reflection - Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (yellows & greens) to desaturate the field - Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (blues) to darken the sky -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About The Mitchell Building The Mitchell Building accommodated the entire University when it opened in 1882, although the University's academic life had begun in a city building six years earlier. The heritage-listed building features the restored foyer with its ornate pillars, elegant staircase, stained glass windows and vaulted cedar ceilings. Fine stonework is a feature of the Mitchell Building, a landmark building on Adelaide's North Terrace boulevard. The building is named after the philosopher Sir William Mitchell, who was Vice-Chancellor from 1916 to 1942, and Chancellor from 1942 to 1948. A statue of Sir Walter Watson Hughes, who with Sir Thomas Elder provided funds to establish the University, is located at the front of the building.

St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Interior III - HDR
Made by Dale Allman
Enjoy - Canon 5D Mark2. - ISO 100, f16, 30 sec, 17mm. - Canon 17-40 f/4 L. - Tripod About St Francis Xavier Cathedral Bishop Francis Murphy arrived in Adelaide in 1844 to find his cathedral was a warehouse. With the building of a bishop's house at West Terrace and the opening of a church-school behind it in 1845, Bishop Murphy had a pro-cathedral. (This term seems not to have been used to describe St Patrick's, West Terrace.) The diocese was established during a depression. The exodus to the goldfields in Victoria circa 1851 added to the financial woes of the bishop. The Cathedral was designed to be constructed in three stages so that the Diocesan finances would not be unduly stretched. 140 years after the Cathedral's foundation stone was laid, the cathedral was completed. It then became possible to dedicate the Cathedral. This was done on 11 July 1996. July 11 was chosen as this had been the date of the 1858 opening. The Cathedral's patron saint, St Francis Xavier, is one of the patron saints of missionary endeavor. Bishop Murphy came to the then mission field of Australia. His own patron saint was St Francis Xavier. In the Cathedral sanctuary, statues of the two saints of the missions, St Francis Xavier and St Therese of Lisieux, look down on to the altar and the adjacent grave site of the bishop-founder of the diocese.

Ball of light - Time for a break!
Made by biskitboy
THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE IS HERE! : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/ I love the Ball of Light, but I think it is time for a bit of a break. I have some pretty serious time commitments coming up. I am moving house in a couple of weeks. Which means a lot of packing. I have the bowerbird bazaar coming up again, which is a massive time commitment getting prints etc ready. The next full moon falls on the weekend I am moving so I will probably miss that. I just want to say again, thanks to everyone for the support, and encouragement. I feel that the Ball of Light project is entering a new and exciting time. I am really looking forward to working on it some more. I thought I would post this puppy. I will remember this night down at the beach as a one of my favorite! So, can I do it, not create, or post a Ball of Light image for a month? Peace! (The only adjustments to this image are minor brightness and saturation tweaks. NO PIXELS ARE ADDED OR REMOVED. Ball of Light - HEADING TO GERMANY!
Made by biskitboy
Well the Ball of Light will be in Munich Germany for the September 14 Full Moon (hence the 14 in the image). I popped out and created this tonight to celebrate. It is meant to be a bit silvery, bluey and reddish to complement the Red Bull can! Why the Red Bull can? Red Bull Media group in Germany took rights to the Ball of Light film a while ago ( www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/ ). Sam Collins, the film maker (and good friend), was contacted this week and asked if I would mind being interviewed about the film as they are using it in a television program. The deal was I needed to be Munich (the other side of the world) to be part of the program. So, Kyrie and I are flying to Munich on the 8th of September for the show. I am so incredibly excited. On so many levels. Firstly, I have travelled very little in my life. Secondly, I am traveling with the Ball of Light for the first time overseas. AND this means a bit more exposure for the Ball of Light! (you have to excuse my silly excitement) Peace, and good fun!

Rundle Mall Fountain - HDR
Made by Dale Allman
About Rundle Mall Fountain in HDR. Very happy with the way the colours turned out in this. Enjoy - Canon 5D Mark2. - ISO 100, f16, 8sec, 21mm. - Canon 17-40 f/4 L. - Tripod About Rundle Mall Fountain Two fountains were originally erected in front of the Jubilee Exhibition Building, formerly at North Terrace opposite Pulteney Street, they were handed over by the South Australian Government to the City Council in 1908, one to be erected in North Adelaide and the other in South Adelaide. These fountains were constructed in the late Victorian era and are examples of the domestic fountains of the period. The larger of the two is in Creswell Gardens and the smaller was originally moved from Osmond Gardens to Rundle Mall, at the junction of Gawler Place and Rundle Mall. It was subsequently moved further down the mall, and is now adjacent to the entrance to the Adelaide Arcade. The water effect of this fountain consists solely of the spray from the top of the fountain overflowing to the central bowl, finally dropping into the ground level basin. This fountain is pictured above.

Ball of Light - Layers of Light and Time
Made by biskitboy
I always have so much fun, as I am sure we all do, looking through old images looking for something a bit different. I still have heaps of images from Lake Mungo, but have decided to draw a line in the sand with that project as the July shoot is coming up. I am pretty keen to do the whole interactive thing again. So will need to be getting onto that shortly. It is looking like we will be heading to Kangaroo Island to the Remarkables. The voting is defenitely swinging that way! The image above is special to me as it makes me think about the beach we lived at for so long. It makes me think about how light and time are layered so deeply. How I love that the light is still there because it is here staring at me now. The layers of time, because I was there, and still can be now just by looking at this. Ah, stop waffling Den. Have a great weekend, and for those of you up there, have a happy 4th July! (The only adjustments to this image are minor brightness and saturation tweaks. NO PIXELS ARE ADDED OR REMOVED. Ball of Light - Bring on the Night
Made by biskitboy
BRAND NEW SITE www.balloflight.com.au A bright blue Ball of Light is a rare thing indeed. Every time I am lucky enough to see a blue Ball of Light it always seems to play havoc with my camera. It is almost like old Bluey has some weird type of crazy space energy. This night was awesome! Had my father down the beach with me at Grange in South Australia. What a great night with the old fella. I think he had fun too. Big weekend coming up this weekend. Today my printer started preparing 6 A0 prints that are being shown (and for sale) at a private residence that is turned into an art gallery for a private showing on Sunday. A bit nerve racking really. But am looking forward to the experience. Ill wack up some photos next week. I have put an enlargement of the reflection below. So often the reflection gets lost. Light of Hope Fundraiser
Made by biskitboy
CHECK OUT www.balloflight.com.au Well tonight was the Ball of Light exhibition for our fundraiser, helping a good friend Mardi raise money for her trip to Nepal. We had about 60 people at the studio, and managed to raise about $2,000 dollars. It was a really exciting night. Some other good news came from the evening that will be divulged at a later date. This picture has my wife Kyrie, Mardi, her husband Paul and the Ball of Light who turned up at the end of the night. Ive uploaded a large image so you can see how well they behaved! It felt really good to use my photography for good. Plan (the charity) does amazing work all over the world and I feel proud that I was able to work with them to do good. Anyway, full moon this weekend and I plan on catching up on some well deserved photography, yeah! (The only adjustments to this image are minor brightness and saturation tweaks. Ball of Light - Showing its Inner Feelings
Made by biskitboy
www.balloflight.com.au I know, another old series. But, I thought it was fascinating how this night a long time ago the Ball of Light revealed itself in quite an odd fashion. It is rare that the Ball of Light lets me see its inner workings. But this night I must have been very sneaky cause i got a few of these shots. I am finishing up and heading out now in search of the beast. It is nearly low tide, the moon is in nearly full flight and it is not too freezing out tonight. I read a string on the Light Junkies page that asked: you know you are a light junkie when?. Well I reckon you know your a light junkie when you say goodnight to your wife, head out dressed like a robber, and hang out under a jetty for a few hours spinning like a fool! And that is normal, and exciting! Have fun (There is no photoshop manipulation of this image at all. It is taken in a single exposure, with no use of mechanical devices. Ball of Light - Damn it's Bright!
Made by biskitboy
CHECK OUT www.balloflight.com.au On Friday night I was out with Sam (making a short film/doco about the Ball of Light). We went to a couple of locations I thought would suit. Unfortunately the places I regularly find the Ball of Light are not to conducive to shooting video, just a tad dark. Sam asked If we could go somewhere with a bit more ambient light. So here we were. Street lights, car lights, artwork lights. Turned out ok though. Sam is a very talented film maker and I am really excited about having the film made. Will take some time though. FOR A BIT OF FUN CHECK OUT THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/ I finished my chores around the house today and felt compelled to head over to the West Terrace Cemetary here in Adelaide. I havent been here for a while and I know it is a favorite haunt of the Ball of Light. There was all sorts of crazy light pollution going on, and even the odd plane or two! But I think old Jeremiah was stiring in his grave, poor old bugger. Have a great week everyone. And be strong! D (The only adjustments to this image are minor brightness and saturation tweaks. CHECK OUT www.balloflight.com.au Looking back through some old Ball of Light bits and pieces I found this little beauty. Clearly the BAll of Light wanted me to wait for Christmas before posting this one. It is clearly trying to look like a christmas decoration (although not a very christmasy location) and wanted me to wish everyone a merry christmas from the Ball of Light!
