Infantry Abilene Daily Reflector, Monday, Sept. 8, 1919 Vol. XXXIII, No. 110 DAVID MATTESON AT REST ______ Prominent Abilene Resident Served As Mayor Three Terms. _____ Funeral services for David Matteson, aged 81, who died Saturday afternoon, were held this morning at 10:00 o’clock from the Methodist church, Rev. Interment was made in Abilene cemetery. Four surviving children were here for the funeral. They are Mrs. Jas. Lancy, W. A. Matteson and H. E. Matteson of this city and Mrs. Nettie Farley of Denver. Mr. Matteson was one of the early settlers here, coming in 1873 and took a homestead in northwest Dickinson. He later moved to Abilene and was interested in financial matters and for three terms was mayor of Abilene. He was also a veteran of the Civil War. Abilene Daily Reflector, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1919, Pg. 5 Vol. XXXIII, No. 112 Obituary-David Matteson David Matteson was born in West Greenwich, R. I., Sept. 17, 1838, and here his mother died when he was only nineteen months old. Mr. Matteson spent his childhood and youth in the east. He was married to Maryette Brown, Sept. 17, 1860, at Geneva, Wis., and to this union was born five children. One of these namely, Chas. David Matteson died in 1902, while four were here at the funeral services and were present at their father’s death. These are; Mrs. Hattie A. Laney, W. A. Laney, W. A. Matteson, H. E. Matteson, all of Abilene, while Mrs. Nettie Farley is of Denver, Ohio. Mr. Matteson served his country during the Civil War, and for three years, one month and nineteen days he was a member of the Wisconsin Vol. Inf. In 1873, Mr. Matteson came to Dickinson county, and here he has been at home ever since. Here his wife was laid to rest in 1897, and in the sorrows and the joys of frontier life he took his part. He served as mayor of Abilene for three terms and took an active part in the social and political life of the community. He was a man of considerable ability, and always held in high esteem by his fellows. Mr. Matteson united with the Methodist church, February 8, 1914, and has been a faithful member ever since. It was late in life for a man to take such a step, and it is very rare for people to do so, but Mr. Matteson did it after a deliberate consideration being convinced it was the right thing to do. For several years Mr. Matteson has been confined to his room with paralysis, and now at the age of 80 years, eleven months and 20 days he has crossed the river. There remain to mourn his departure the above named children with their families, and a host, of friends.

Daniel H. Jeffcoat
Made by jajacks62
Co. I, 76th ILL. Infantry The Abilene Daily Chronicle, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1916, Pg. 3 Comrade D. H. Jeffcoat. Again we are called upon to pay a last tribute of respect to one of our Comrades who has heard and answered to the last roll call. For nearly seventy-six years our Comrade Daniel H. Jeffcoat walked among men doing faithfully both as a citizen and soldier, his work as it came to him. For three years from August 5th, 1862 to August 1865, as a member of Company I, 76 Illinois Infantry, he performed the duties and shared the dangers common to country’s defenders. At Vicksburg, Mississippi, in May and June 1863, and again in March and April 1865, with many intervening actions with comrades of his regiment, he proved that he was not too proud to fight, or afraid to meet even death when duty and country called. Since the close of the war first in his native state of Illinois and since 1876 in Kansas he has demonstrated that a brave soldier makes a devoted peace loving citizen. During the last month of suffering his children have faithfully ministered to his wants. The loved wife and mother having preceeded him to the better home. And now we, his comrades of Abilene Post, come to mingle our tears with and to extend to his children our sincere and unfeigned sympathy in this hour of bereavement. Therefore be it, Resolved by the members of Abilene Post No. 63, department of Kansas G. A. R. that we do hereby most sincerely extend to the children and other relatives of our departed comrade our profound sympathy in the loss of this good father and friend. And would remind them that he is now in the Hands not Only of a Just Judge but a kind loving Father. Resolved that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the post and a copy given the members of the family. W. S. ANDERSON. W. T. DAVIDSON. F. S. ALLMAN. Committee.

Made by jimsawthat
Lebold Mansion is a Victorian-era house in Abilene, Kansas, USA. The mansion was built in 1880 by banker Conrad Lebold. Constructed of native Kansas limestone, it is considered to be one of the finest Victorian decorative art museums in the midwest. Lebold Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The museum has been featured in Victorian Homes Magazine and Victorian Decorating Magazine. The Lebold Mansion has recently undergone an extensive restoration by the company Victorian Interiors of San Francisco, Ca. The Hersey dugout was incorporated into the construction of the mansion's tower and is preserved as part of the foundation located at the tower's base. Tour patrons still can view the dugout when touring the home. [1] The Mansion has served many purposes in its existence. In 1920 it was used by the local phone company as a boarding house for telephone operators. In 1930 it became an orphanage and finally an apartment building from 1940-1970. It has survived amazingly intact and has been under constant upkeep and restoration as a historic house museum since 1973.

Interior of the Place of Meditation in the Eisenhower Center in Abilene Kansas. It is the final resting place of Dwight David Eisenhower, October 14, 1890-March 28, 1969; Mamie Geneva Doud Eisenhower, November 14, 1896-November 1, 1979; and their first-born son, Doud Dwight Eisenhower, September 23, 1917-January 2, 1921. Designed by James Canole, Kansas State architect, it is built of native limestone quarried in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, and features chipped glass windows designed by Odell Prather, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The windows were constructed by Conway Glass Studio of Winona, Minnesota. The marble used in the crypt is Arabian Travertine from Germany, Italy, and France. There is a meditation portion of the building where, according to General Eisenhower's wishes, it was hoped that visitors would reflect upon the ideals that made this a great nation and pledge themselves again to continued loyalty to those ideals. The Place of Meditation was built with private funds under the auspices of the Eisenhower Presidential Library Commission.

Coleman Efficiency Lamp base - 1
Made by Mike Leavenworth
From the Dickenson County Historical Museum - another part of our delightful trip to Abilene. I hvae heard of and seen pictures of the Coleman Arc Lantern - but had never seen one in-person. Coleman collecting is/was a pretty good part of my life - and this was a real treat to see. Not at all sure how it works - or even if this is assembled correctly or is even functional. Update Jan 17, 2011 Guess I still have not seen an arc lantern as this is actually and Efficiency Lamp - in the style that inspired Mr. Coleman to buy the company and begin a wonderful journey bringing affordable light to millions worldwide. Ike
Made by Kansas Explorer 3128
Detail of the General Dwight D. Eisenhower statue on the grounds of the Eisenower Center, Abilene, Kansas. Also found at the complex are the Eisenhower family home, the Eisenhower Presidential Library, the Eisenower Museum, a Place of Meditation (where Ike and Mamie are buried), and a visitor's center. I highly recommend Abilene, the Eisenhower Center, and numerous other attractions in the town, either as a short stop while traveling through on Interstate 70, or as a weekend destination.

Dickinson County Courthouse (Abilene, Kansas)
Made by courthouselover
This nice and ugly 1956 Modern courthouse was designed by the firm of Cayton and Murray. Although Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in my home state in the town of Denison, he called the town of Abilene his hometown. I can see why he liked it so much when I visited here. Also of interest to me is the fact that the city of Abilene, Texas, which is about ten to fifteen times larger that Abilene, Kansas, was named for this community.

Dwight D. Eisenhower's Boyhood Home (Abilene, Kansas)
Made by courthouselover
This structure is located on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. It was the boyhood residence of our nation's 34th president. It should be noted, though, that he was not born in Abilene, Kansas but rather in Denison, Texas. Throughout his life he claimed Abilene as his hometown. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum is located in Abilene, Kansas.

Brookville Hotel
Made by Kansas Explorer 3128
Not a hotel, not even an old building. There was a Brookville Hotel in Brookville, Kansas, that was famous for its fried chicken dinners. This replica sits just off the interstate highway at Abilene, where it is accessible to many more tourists. And they still serve wonderful fried chicken dinners. There is no menu - all they have is fried chicken and the regular fixin's.

Diamond Motel
Made by jimsawthat
A survivor of being bypassed twice by highway relocation, the Diamond Motel in Abilene, Kansas has beaten the odds. First US40 was relocated, leaving this business isolation into a residential neighborhood. Later, US40 was shifted to run together with Interstate 70, further diminishing the traffic to this small lodging business.

Hitchin Post Cafe has chicken

Old Abilene Town is a generally tacky and dilapidated frontier town recreation in Abilene, Kansas. This restaurant and the town itself both appeared to be closed, if not abandoned. Unfortunately, this decaying concoction is located next door to the Eisenhower Presidential Library. Abilene was Dwight D. Einsenhower's hometown.
