Lifted - Pro 73

Lifted - Pro 73
Made by Donald Macleod
Assignment : Pro 73 'Pete Turner' by Summerspot www.peteturner.com dWIT - 'Lifted' This was a great exploration of an amazing photographer's work. I really enjoyed studying the images of Pete Turner and was engrossed with the drama, colour and simplicity of composition that his work conveys. I was particularly drawn to his 'Americana' and 'Walls of Light' series. Having taken several different shots whilst exploring the themes and styles of his work, I struggled to identify one to submit as I felt none of them had the impact or overall feel of a Pete Turner. 1. which photo(s) inspired you? 'Push', 'Texascape', 'Truckstop', 'Doorways & Stairs', 'Blue Wall & White Stairs' 2. What you like and/or don't like about Pete Turner's style? The feeling of drama and energy. The strength and depth of colour. The effectiveness of composition. 3. Your thoughts and/or thought process behind your assignment submission Colour was the first thing that I explored and went through several experimental images. I then focused more on composition and played around with several ideas but decided to steer away from emulating a specific image. I'm still not sure I chose the right image to submit. 4. How your photo reflects elements of Turner's style? I felt that this image had a nice abstractness and I liked the strong blues and yellows, which echoed the colours of PT's work. 5. What you gained as a photographer from studying Pete Turner's work? This assignment has made me really think about the use and impact of colour. I also learnt to take more time over composition of the shot and it's impact on the final image. Exposure: 1/320 Aperture: f/7.1 ISO: 200 Focal Length: 160mm Flash: No Editing Summary: - Crop to focus on colour and remove an area of grey sky. - Increase in saturation - sharpness - Slight increase to brightness and contrast

Regent Swing Bridge Power Station Machinery - Electric motor

Regent Swing Bridge Power Station Machinery - Electric motor
Made by Scottish Maritime Museum
Regent Swing Bridge, Aberdeen. An early electric motor by Scott & Mountain, Newcastle-upon-Tyne Part of the power station machinery for hydraulic swing bridge, Regent Swing Bridge, Aberdeen Harbour. Built 1899-1904 The bridge was removed in the early 1970s, and the machinery in the SMM was collected by the Scottish Society for the Preservation of Historical Machinery in the 1970s. It was stored for many years behind the Museum of Transport, Glasgow, and went from there to the SMM. It is a late example of an independent power station for a hydraulic power station. The electric motor was powered with electricity generated by the municipal power station, and the gas engine by coal gas from the municipal gas works. After the gas works closed, the engine was adapted to run on North Sea gas, one of only two so converted, as far as we know. It was probably the last gas engine to run commercially in the North of Scotland. The Bridge it served was built as part of a major refurbishment of the Regent Dock, a key part of Aberdeen Harbour It is part of a group of three power installations for swing bridges in the SMM collection, a unique set. 011/365 - "Yes, Posie: On Aberdeen Beach! In January!"

011/365 - "Yes, Posie: On Aberdeen Beach! In January!"
Made by PeterPreston
I have to admit that I'm rather pleased with this photo. Not so much for the technical merit as for the moment I captured. Posie watched the surfer walk all the way down to the water, as if there was something odd going on. One possible reason for her interest is that when she had only been with us for a few weeks I was walking her down at the beach. We'd seen a surfer out on the water but she got distracted by eating crabs, or starfish, or whatever the delicacy was that morning. We lost sight of him and I assumed he must've left without me noticing, or drowned, then he suddenly walked past, just behind us. He gave Posie such a fright that she started to bark at him. Since then she keeps an eye on the surfers whenever we see them down there. This image has been cropped, backlighted, boosted contrast, deepened, colour cast removed, and some other stuff I can't recall, all done in Photoscape. I really should keep better notes but I kind of know what I'm doing.

livin' just isn't hard enough

livin' just isn't hard enough
Made by Kalense Kid
another dream that will never come true, just to compliment your sorrow. another life that I've taken from you - a gift to add on to your pain and suffering. another truth you can never believe has crippled you completely. all the cries you're beginning to hear, trapped in your mind, and the sound is deafening. let me enlighten you. this is the way i pray. livin' just isn't hard enough. burn me alive, inside - livin' my life's not hard enough... take everything away. another nightmare about to come true will manifest tomorrow. another love that I've taken from you, lost in time, on the edge of suffering, another taste of the evil i breed will level you completely. bring to life everything that you fear, live in the dark, and the world is threatening. let me enlighten you - this is the way i pray - return to me, leave me no one. turn to me, return to me. cast aside... you make me turn away. - Disturbed - Prayer

13A Footdee Terminus

13A Footdee Terminus
Made by Prisma Aberdeen
Footdee Terminus first came into being on the 10th January 1921 when Aberdeen Corporation scheduled its first bus service. Since 2008 Footdee has been the terminus of the 13A and from October 2010 is just a bus stop as the 13A continues on to the new designated terminus at Beach Retail Park. The Footdee terminus is the bus stop where the mini is parked. The red roofed hut on the left is one of around three Aberdeen Corporation built shelters to still exist. B10BLE 62129 (X608 NSS) seen here heading for the Beach Retail Park although the driver has already screened for Scatterburn.

Harbour Gloaming

Harbour Gloaming
Made by TheNorthLight.co.uk (davidlangan)
There was a truly glorious sunset a few nights ago and I just managed to find a spare 5 minutes to get this shot. I was stuck in the city centre of Aberdeen so decided to head straight to harbour and hopefully get the city skyline in the background. The best of the gloaming colours had already faded as the bright zingy colours where being swamped by the deeper purples and blues of dusk. Details of my website can be found on my flickr profile. Day 4: "It's my ball now."

Day 4: "It's my ball now."
Made by Andrew.Mein
4/1/10 Went for a walk along the beach this morning to watch some of my friends surf kayaking. I fully expected to have a colourful shot of some of the kayaks against the gray of the sea, but as we were heading there we saw this little dog who was playing on the beach with some other bigger dogs he was running circles round the (literally) and was not going to let them have the ball for anything. The shot is not as sharp as I would have liked, but I think that might not be a bad thing as it adds to the sense of motion.

The Night Welder

The Night Welder

It was the end of an evenings photoshoot and while driving back home we saw this guy welding in the harbour. Naturally we stopped and asked him if he minded us taking a few shots. He didnt object to it (but he must have thought we were a couple of weirdos since it was near midnight!) so we thought pulling the tripods out would be pushing it a bit thus this is handheld. ...in an odd way... ...we were down the beach at New Year time and spotted this dude...but couldn't figure out what he was doing...he was walking up and down the water line collecting water in his various buckets (shown) and tranfering the water from one to the other and collecting more water and sloshing it around and swapping it between the buckets...as very mysterious...

Aberdeen harbour while watching the loading and offloading of the various supply vessels. Cranes and boats and storage tanks in silhouette with the Aberdeen city skyline in the background. The port is still very active. The sun has not set on the oil industry in Scotland. This is exactly how the image came out of the camera, no Photoshop at all.

Have been working in Aberdeen for the last few weeks, and saw some familiar faces from a few years ago - Normand Tonjer used to be a regular visitor when I lived in Stavanger - she's a multipurpose support vessel, based on the UT 705 supply ship design, built in 1983, and converted in 2000 - I just like the big heli deck !
