Where have I been? OK, I'll have to add some more info: This is not a fountain that everyone who's been to this town has seen, but its fairly well known, and very close to a smaller sculpture, which IS one of the most well known in the town. Possibly even in the country. One that groups of tourists from Japan and Eastern Europe were queing up to have their photos taken in front of when we passed it on a quiet morning yesterday. That other, more famous sculpture is based on a figure which is known world wide and has been the subject of a world wide smash hit major movie. THIS fountain, on the other hand, is based on national mythology or folklore, and symbolizes the land its situated on being separated / torn off from a neighbouring country...

Gefion Fountain, Created by Anders Bundgaard,1908. According to an ancient legend, Gefion was the goddess who ploughed the island of Zealand out of Sweden. The Swedish king Gylfe offered the goddess Gefion as much land as she was capable of ploughing within one day and one night. Gefion had transformed her four sons into oxen and had them plough so deeply in the ground that they raised the land and pulled it into the sea.
