E. Clem Wilson Building

E. Clem Wilson Building
Made by Non Paratus
This building shows a characteristic feature of many art deco buildings in Los Angeles, namely, the stepped levels. This was designed to bring more light to the street and avoid the concrete canyon effect that occurs in places like New York City. And because there was a 12-story height limit for buildings at the time it also creates a forced-perspective illusion of greater height. Unfortunately, some of the nicer details in this building are lost, such as the original exterior of the first two floors, which were remodeled at a later date. Plus, the stubby square pinnacles atop each level also once sported decorative projections, which were removed for reasons of earthquake safety. And then there's the ugly sign at the top, which has been there for years and is unlikely to go away.

Denim-upholstered Mercedes-Benz. And judging from the hanky, this Benzo's a fister. Or just a whacked sense of humor. On May 9 2011, I found out the car had belonged to Marshall Barer. I was told that: Marshall Barer wrote Broadway shows, Once upon a mattress was his hit, he also wrote the Mighty Mouse song Here I come to save the day At that time he lived in a art gallery in venice Beach and made art sculptures out of rags tied together and hung from the ceiling. One day he hit a pole or something while parking and damaged his fender. When the body shop told him the price, he decided to just cover the car in denim rags. It would have been a few years before your photo, looks pretty faded in the shots.

This will always be the Mutual of Omaha Building to me. It looks very strange without its pylon on top. Designed by Meyer and Holler in 1930.
