There are four photos posted here. Scroll down for the other three, and for a little history of the cathedral. :o) Notre Dame is one of my favorite places of Paris. When I lived there years ago I used to go inside to sit down and enjoy the cool darkness and the quiet. In recent visits to Paris, I still enter beautiful Notre Dame at least once, to go listen to the soprano singing vespers and just to Be there. It has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with the amazing beauty of this structure, and the energy there that has grown over the centuries as people of all faiths and walks of life have gone inside to connect with something ineffable but tangible, and greater than themselves. Just a fantastic space!! And if you have a chance to be there around 5:30 or 6:00 PM sit down and wait for the soprano to come sing solo accompanied by the organ, and let the sound wash through you. It is exquisitely beautiful. Although I don't understand the Latin words, the feeling is so very very sincere and moving. Wondrous! Little secret for those of you who love to find the golden treasures from the angels: look for the little chapel of La Vierge de Lourdes. It's inside along the north wall, near the entrance. Stay there a long while very quietly and watch the candles and the statue, and see what happens. Millions have prayed there. It is a mindspace of gossamer energy that soaks your soul in radiance. It knocked my socks off. And I left the cathedral with eyes of Wonder. Information about Notre Dame here: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cath%c3%a9drale_Notre-Dame_de_Paris Here is a link to a wonderful series of old maps of the historic center of Paris, showing the development around the Ile de la Cite and Ile St. Louis from the 1400's to the 1800's. paris1900.lartnouveau.com/paris00/ile_cite_st-louis.htm

Why Choose When You Can Have Both ?

Why Choose When You Can Have Both ?
Made by an untrained eye
December 8th, 2007 - Paris, France I was trudging along in the rain behind Notre-Dame on Saturday, trying to hide my frustration at the lack of real photo opportunities behind a feigned interest in gargoyles when the friend I was with, who as a general rule finds my obession with street photography unhealthy, not to say unethical, said to me in the most matter-of-fact way, Did you see that woman we just passed ? She was wearing different coloured shoes - it would have made a great photograph. I barely had time to glance around before the woman in question disappeared into the crowd behind me, but it was long enough to see that indeed the potential for a great shot was there. I walked on, my frustration doubled, trying to work out whether my friend's remark was a coded encouragement, all the more welcome for being so unexpected, to indulge my passion for once. As lightheartedly as I could manage I repeated her words. Yes, it would have made a great photograph. No response. We walked on further, as the rain became increasingly heavy. We stopped beneath the awning of a souvenir store and looked absentmindedly at postcards. The missed opportunity continued to eat away at me. Eventually, I could contain myself no more. I turned to my friend. I have to go and get a picture of her. Wait for me here, I blurted, turning to run before she could reply. By the time I caught up with her, the woman with the unmatching shoes - a fashion statement, or an unwitting witness to her colour-blindness ? - was almost the other side of Notre-Dame. But I caught her, and I took several shots as discreetly as I could. This is the clearest one of her shoes. You can see the whole outfit . Trust me, it's worth it. This photograph has been blogged on the rather fabulous This Is Star.

Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/#!/ritacranephoto For contacts who haven't see this image I posted a while back, here it is for you again, Flickr friends! I'm posting this one because it is a perfect symbolic photo regarding the entire experience of taking pictures in modern cities. When in Europe working on photo series the challenge is always modern day traffic! What can I say? This was taken in the ancient Marais district near Pont Louis-Philippe. I love how it turned out....one feels the Ancient Ones standing still in their historic style, while the modern age zooms by in a completely different time zone! You see here the historic little neighborhood restaurant Chez Julien, and in the background is the ancient church of St. Gervais et St. Protais looming in the darkness. Then there's the sudden appearance of the 21st century. !!! See more information on this place here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_Saint-Gervais There is a population density of 23,000 people per square kilometer in Paris! Where I live in rural northern California there are about 7 per square kilometer. It is utterly different. Paris is a beautiful city that I love so much and yet.....and yet....the traffic is astonishing and terribly congested: what to do about transportation for all the inhabitants and visitors?? Everyone needs to get around in this city, of course, but at what cost do people use their cars to go everywhere? Recently a bicycle rental throughout the city has been created....a great idea, and apparently it is helping!

Paris I love for being both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. On my way to take pictures along the Seine, I was enchanted by the way the golden angel (called the Genie de la Liberte' or the Spirit of Liberty) on top of the column comemorating the Revolution of 1830 was lit up by bright sunlight breaking through after a refreshing rainstorm. The dark storm clouds created a beautiful steel blue background. Everyone was on their way somewhere, in a hurry, but the angel was happily enjoying the sunlight. Paris j'adore pour ces tableaux a la fois ordinaire et extraordinaire. information about La Colonne is here, with a close-up photo of the angel. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonne_de_Juillet and here is history of the Bastille: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_de_la_Bastille#Histoire_de_la...

Follow me on twitter: twitter.com/#!/ritacranephoto [Four photos at this post, Flickr friends! Scroll down for the other three.] I couldn't believe my eyes when I emerged from the dimly lit interior of Notre Dame --- after enjoying the soprano singing vespers --- and walked into the soft rain showers of the evening. What a wonderful surprise to be greeted by this illuminated sky full of rich color! The shining pavement reflecting a glorious sunset shone against the dark buildings, and people with their umbrellas were in silhouette, framed by the illuminated lamposts. Paris between day and night! It was one of those moments when you just grab your camera and do your best to capture the magic! . Quelle belle surprise inattendue! THANKS SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY FLICKR FRIENDS.

HDR from 3 RAW shots and colors filters effects. That's rare in my pics, but I did not change the sky this time, but I cleaned the pic in deleting from the image all the people walking and those sitting on the wooden border you can see on the forground :-)) I am fully back :-) Unfortunately, a great friend of mine was not able to come to Paris as scheduled.. Don't worry Michel, bottles are on standby for next time, and hope very soon! :-)) Concerning the events of the last days here regarding censure, I still feel sad for concerned people and saw that some members deleting themselves accounts..... I regulary read the topic about this matter, but the more I read, the less I understand (why discussions are not in russian?? :-)). I just wait the official conclusions, with the hope that people are intelligent enough to take the right decisions and preserve our great communauty, and I will decide myself what to do accordingly.... But before that, I will try to do what I am for here first : photos.... Have a great week-end dear friends :-) (better)

I walk the streets like a kid, as interested in the old cobblestones as the old architecture. I picture red wine crashing to the ground and spilling through the cracks, like in the opening of the Dickens novel. And then I look up, and everything is right out of a movie. I tend to ignore the tourists and idiots because they kind of take away from the... je ne sais quoi! Here is a shot of the Hôtel de Ville, just about a 15 minute walk at midnight from Notre Dame, where I had just shot a stirring sunset shot. I wish I could freeze sunset and run around and hit every landmark at the same time... but since it's impossible... I suppose I just have to go back another time. Trey's Tip: Don't worry about getting the WHOLE building in the photo. Feel free to focus on the most interesting bits. from my daily photo blog at www.stuckincustoms.com

Hi everybody! This week-end, Flavie, Alix and I had the pleasure to meet in Paris (so kind, and who speaks french as a master), Dustin Diaz (without his heavy photo & light gear ;) ) and their lovely 5 months son Agent ! It was really a great moment for us, having delicatessen, cheese and wine in a little cafe-brasserie. Talking about babies, pregnancy, and a little bit about photo... Taking picts of both families... Dustin trying my alpha 850 (all pictures taken in manual mode and manual WB :) Erin took this shot with my camera It was a very good moment with a really pleasant (and patient... ;)) couple with a adorable baby ! :) And, I must confess, I was really happy to meet The strobist master, who learned a lot of things to me with his works...

I came to Place de la Bastille (as many other flickrians) to shoot a protest for the right to smoke marijuana and found myself into a circus parade ! :-)). There is actually a big Fair in Paris called La Foire du Trône and a parade was organized in the very same place of the protest to make some communication for that event (eclipsing the protest...). The afternoon was just fantastically fun and enjoyable. ----- Finally, a dream came true :-). It is the first time I was able to approach Majorettes in real life for real ! :-)). they were nice girls, and offered me plenty of super nice smiles :-)).

Paris - Notre Dame Gargoyle

Paris - Notre Dame Gargoyle
Made by GlobeTrotter 2000
Many medieval cathedrals included gargoyles and chimeras. The most famous examples are those of Notre Dame de Paris. Although most have grotesque features, the term gargoyle has come to include all types of images. Some gargoyles were depicted as monks, or combinations of real animals and people, many of which were humorous. Unusual animal mixtures, or chimeras, did not act as rainspouts and are more properly called grotesques. They serve more as ornamentation, but are now synonymous with gargoyles. Notre Dame at Christmas is even more wonderful than usual. They put up an amazing Christmas tree that is magnificent! Trey's Tip: If I were to take this photo again, I would not put the tree right in front of Notre Dame. It gets a little bit lost in there, doesn't it? If II was smarter, I would have moved a few more steps forward and to the right, so that there was some layering and shape-separation. from my daily photo blog at www.stuckincustoms.com

The last one from Paris already, I should have gone there much earlier, 6 frontpages and one Explore #1.. 155 seconds of exposure in front of the Notre Dame. Last day we were in Paris, there were a lot of clouds, so that's great for long exposure.. Do the people actually look at this church? It's more like they take a picture and go inside, where they take pictures and walk somewhere else, it's such a nice building and I could see that, when I was waiting there for more than 2 minutes ;)

Here is one of my preferred point of view in Paris. I like so much to walk on the riverside and show all those so beautiful bridges (about 40 in the city). Originally, the sky was full blue and a little bit pale, so I changed it. But I took a HDR of the sky vertically, so I used to do a strong torsion and reverse it with PS ;-)) It explains this stellar effect :-)) I go now to take some photos. Will be here later :-)) Have a great saturday dear friends :-)
