Northbound Jackson park-Howard B train led by married-pair car 6247 (St Louis 1954 order 1779) is about to enter the State Street subway @ 13th & State 7-23-81 The curved-door 6000's and the 1-50 single-unit cars were built using parts from traded-in PCC streetcars. They were not, themselves, rebuilt streetcars. The streetcars were sent to St Louis Car, who stripped them of reusable parts and scrapped the rest. The parts (trucks, motors, controls, brakes, seats, light fixtures and windows among others) were stockpiled and used in building the rapid transit cars. An individual 6000 might have parts from a number of streetcars.

Approximately 9AM to noon, 5 seconds between frames. I just got a new remote timer for my camera so this is just a test. I'll be posting more (and more interesting) ones soon. I had one I did from my apartment in Seattle, but it was hacked together using a TI graphing calculator which offered little in the way of options and killed the batteries in the calculator after an hour. Oh, and sorry about the dirt on the outside of the window. I suppose I'll have to wait a while before they get around to cleaning them again.


13th Street Portal

Before 1993, what is now the north branch and subway of the Red Line was paired with the south branch of what is now the Green Line. This subway portal connected the south side branches to the subway. The routes were reconfigured in 1993 to pair the high-ridership Howard and Dan Ryan branches to form the Red Line and the lower-ridership Lake and Englewood/Jackson Park branches to create the Green Line. A new portal to connect the subway to the Dan Ryan branch was built and this portal is no longer in revenue service.

I was greatly surprised that day to see 2000's burst out of the 13th street portal in North-South service; they had been a fixture of Lake Street (later Lake-Dan Ryan) as long as they had been in service and had for a considerable time also been a feature of West-Northwest. A Howard-Jackson Park B train exits the State Street subway 7-20-82 with 2105 (Pullman 1964 order 7025) in the lead.

This train will see the light of day again at Sheffield and Armitage when it will ascend onto the former Northwestern Elevated (no relationship to the North Western railroad) main line.

Sign hanging on door announces that this is a short-turn going only to 61st street. As I took this shot toward the end of morning rush hour, it is probably going to lay up at Upper 61st street yard.

Northbound CTA Englewood-Howard train led by married pair car 6361 (St Louis 1954-55 order 1779) goes into the hole @ 13th & State. 7-23-81 After I discovered it, this was one of my favorite places for L pictures (I have a thing for tunnel shots). Alas, it is now only used for reroutes and car transfers.

It was a great surprise to me to see these cars on the North-South route; they had previously been a feature of Lake Street (later Lake-Dan Ryan) and for a while of West-Northwest.
