Vincennes medieval castle - Château de Vincennes

Vincennes medieval castle - Château de Vincennes

This stitching of 3 pictures renders the massive impression you get from the dungeon courtyard. The size of the visitors gives you the right scale... ( they are not Hobbits :-) ) 250 different views and documents on the castle in : 250 photos et documents sur le château dans : Built between 1337 and 1373 as a residence for the kings of France, the Vincennes keep is the highest medieval fortified building and one of the best preserved fortresses in Europe. This castle, from the Middle Ages to our time, has consistently found itself at the centre of French History. It rises 50 m above the ground of its courtyard. The instability of the dungeon prompted its closure to the public in October 1995. Its restoration, which was completed in August 2006 was one of the most extensive and technical restoration endeavors to be carried out over recent years. The buiding of the underground railway at the beginning of XIXth century changed the level of the groundwater, which caused an overload on the dungeon's central column, key skeletal stucture of the building. The column started to fissure and some elements of it had to be changed : a very important technical challenge as the load is 250t per floor !. In order to establish how to restore the tower it was necessary first to set up a complete scaffolding structure, to drill sample cores in the walls and foundations and to look at the dynamic and static structural loads. It made possible to study in detail an essential but totally unknown aspect of the construction: the inclusion in the 14th century of 2,500 of iron bars that circle the edifice and act as tie bars in the flooring of its storeys Besides, one-third of the 20,000 blocks visible in the building's facing, have been replaced. This has allowed the tower to regain its original colour and brightness.
