Lower Falls Industrial Buildings

Lower Falls Industrial Buildings

At the Lower Falls there is a chamber cut into the side of the river. It's well photographed but I learned when going there that it is actually a somewhat dangerous hike. The sides of the gorge walls are continually crumbling and I saw the evidence for myself; several hundred pound chunks of gorge wall fall down regularly. Another danger are the dam releases that cause the water level to rise quickly, people fishing from the riverbank have been killed. You're on your own now. This picture was taken just inside what is often referred to as a cave. In actuality It's either a storm sewer or former power generation raceway. From this position you can see the Driving Park bridge, Kodak Hawkeye plant, various RG&E buildings and a small part of the falls (on the right). The falls were generating a lot of mist, in fact by the time we returned from shooting we were totally soaked. The inside of the cave is always damp and dripping. Bob has put up . Because the view encompasses a very high contrast range the picture is made up of two exposures, one for the interior of the cave and one for the distant landscape. The two images were combined in Photoshop using two layers and a mask.

Dot dot dot dot dot dot dot. This shot is interesting not only because it is a fun little minimalist composition rich with textural detail, but also because it nicely illustrates the mirror alignment problem that my D200 has. In the viewfinder, I composed this with 7 dots centered, with the outer dots just barely off the frame edge. Now I know that the viewfinder doesn't show me 100% of the image, but is it too much to ask that it should show me the Middle 95%? You can see that the resulting image is off-center and slightly rotated (left end droops a tad) compared to what I intended and framed with the finder. Arg. Also, it's interesting because it really shows the distortion present at the wide end of my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens. Those circles should all be, well, circles, but the outermost ones get pretty stretched by the optics!

I Made It!

I had often thought that the only place I hadn't shot Rochester's Lower Falls from was the west side of the gorge, down by the river. I didn't think I could ever make it down there! I'd shot it from the other side by the river a couple of years. Today, a beautiful day, with the river running strong, I took the plunge! This is not something I will be doing again I tell you! But I made it back all right (took me 45 minutes to get up to the Maplewood Rose Garden parking lot) but I'm glad I did it. It's another fallsworld from down there. Strange! I took some shoots that don't show andy civilization, that is the power station on the left. But I am finding that for some reason I don't like them as well! There was so much spray you couldn't see where the falls ended on one side.

Do you fall in love often? Yes often. With a view, with a book, with a dog, a cat, with numbers, with friends, with complete strangers, with nothing at all. I love widely, indiscreetly. I forget it is myself I am trying to love back to a better place. Some people dream in color, I feel in colour, strong tones that I hue down for the comfort of the pastelly inclined. Beige and magnolia and a hint of pink are what the well-decorated heart is wearing; who wants my blood red and vein-blue? Don’t lie. Don’t lie. You know you like to view but not to buy. I have found that I am not a space where people want to live. At least not without decorating first. And that is the stubbornness in me: I do not want be someone’s neat little home. {Jeanette Winterson}

Lower Falls Of The Genesee In Winter

I'm mainly posting this now with a picture that many of you liked...and thank you, I do appreciate the remarks. But I was thinking that some might have thought that all the impressive ice on the right hand side was a frozen waterfall. Not so, just frozen snow melt. here you can see pretty much the real waterfall with the other just barely seen on the right. (Note on 12-8-08 -- Neither of my 2 lenses for the Sony A-200, which I now use most of the time, will fit through the squares on the fence overlooking this falls, so my days of featuring this view are over unless I want to take the Sony H2 out there.)

Bite the Dust

(bigger) Building 9, Kodak Park, Rochester NY... Imploded 8:03am Saturday, June 30, 2007. Building 9 was the former home of photo paper cutting and packaging. It is one of many Kodak buildings being demolished this year, but one of only two getting the dynamite treatment! This was worth getting up at 6am on a Saturday for! I shot many more frames than this at 5fps, but these three tell the story pretty well. The dust cloud reached me in about 10 seconds and was really thick and nasty. Glad I brought a dust mask!

Day is done, gone the sun, From the hills, from the lake, From the skies. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Go to sleep, peaceful sleep, May the soldier or sailor, God keep. On the land or the deep, Safe in sleep. Love, good night, Must thou go, When the day, And the night Need thee so? All is well. Speedeth all To their rest. Fades the light; And afar Goeth day, And the stars Shineth bright, Fare thee well; Day has gone, Night is on. Thanks and praise, For our days, 'Neath the sun, Neath the stars, 'Neath the sky, As we go, This we know, God is nigh.

Images From The Edge

In spite of my never-ending mission to try for some different shots of the much-photogaphed Lower Falls here in Rochester, I first passed up this location which gives one unauthorized access to a full front view of falls I noticed that since the one time I've gone down there others have make a path over the fence and down close. Pictures are difficult from there, mostly because of the constant mist and trying to keep things dry, but coming back I decided to take the plunge and did come up with some fairly decent shots, as seen below.

Tumuelty (Tumblety) Family Plot

Tumuelty (Tumblety) Family Plot
Made by Andrew Hiltz
The grave of the Tumblety family. Francis Tumblety was a key suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders in London, 1888. There are many stories revolving around Tumblety. One of my favorites is that Francis' body, supposedly the evil Jack the Ripper, was instead cremated and his ashes are stored in the urn atop this monument, rather than being interred and desecrating the holy ground of Holy Sepulchre cemetery. The urn does not seem to be a removable piece, but who knows? There's really no evidence to say that he's not ashes in the urn.

2010 Waterfall Highlight

2010 Waterfall Highlight
Made by fallsguyd
Here's a previously unseen picture of one of my waterfall highlights of 2010. One of those expeditions that I probably shouldn't have attempted, but later was glad I make the trip.....ONCE! I would never do this again! It took me about 20 minutes to get down from the top of the gorge on the west side which can be seen in the picture below and at least 45 minutes to get back up. If you go to the 3rd panel of the bridge from the left, that's where I started, slowly coming down at about a 45 degree angle to the river's edge.

What's A Fallsguy To Do?

What's A Fallsguy To Do?
Made by fallsguyd
It's rainly, it's windy, it's 39 degrees. What's a Fallsguy to do? I don't know what I expected here at our convenient northern city falls! Not much is the answer. The once good shooting area down a ways was even more grown up than before. Spray and rain was everywhere. Thus this very common view was all I could come up with. The Genesee River was in high gear, that's for sure. See below for the only semi-exciting thing -- pretty wild action up in the right hand corner of the falls with a large stuck piece of wood.

Use Your Imagination

Use Your Imagination
Made by fallsguyd
In order to properly visualize some new concept of the much photographed Upper Falls here in the city, you must do this -- Imagine you're walking down near a falls in the city....but you can't see the falls very well because of a thick wall of 6 ft. high ragweed. You must see it though! So you stop and with you arms you violently part the ragweed and take a look. You are thrilled! That is actually pretty much what happened. All the other shots I took here had wildly-moving-in-the-wind ragweed. NO INVITES OR ICONS PLEASE

Call Me When It's April!

I think this may be it as far as winter waterfall photography goes! Did you ever try to walk downhill into pretty deep snow, but with a half dozen sets of deep footprints that have frozen over making up the path!? It took me forever to get to to the much photographed Lower Falls of the Genesee, our 2nd major city waterfall, today. Was it worth it? I am not sure. I had actually hoped to see some ice here, but there was just a lot of water and surrounding snow. I did like the muted color of the gray-green water.

Lakeview House Main HDR

Lakeview House Main HDR
Made by WebsterRealtor
This is the first time I took a chance and used HDR methods. I used GiMP as the mode of processing. My goal was a more dramatic picture for a property that deserves more than a plain Jane front shot, but I did not want it to look unnatural. While I am generally pleased with the results I realize I have a lot to learn and welcome suggestions or constructive criticism. I know that people have viewed it and liked the use of a night shot, not realizing that the brights would wash out had I just used a point and click.

Through The Fence Lower Falls

Through The Fence Lower Falls
Made by fallsguyd
My thanks to by friend Christy, who told me about shooting the Upper Falls through the fence about 3 times. I finally got it today, Christy! I had to position my zoom lens carefully between the fence squares and still got some wire in on many takes. And of course I couldn't use a tripod. But it worked! This first picture did have some ghostly out-of-focus wire in the frame but I removed it with Elements. For the second picture I was able to use enough zoom so as not to have to deal with the fence at all.

My Most Exciting Waterfall Experience Of All Time!

My Most Exciting Waterfall Experience Of All Time!
Made by fallsguyd
No exaggeration. And to think I almost didn't stop by the oft-seen and photogrphed Lower Falls of the Genesee today! Obviously lots of water from snow melt and a lot of recent rain. I stood there in absolute awe. It was extremely windy. The falling water would get pushed this way and that way in the wind, hitting the rock and producing ever changing ethereal sculptures of spray, some of them at least 40 ft. in the air. With accompanying thundering sound. NO INVITES OR ICONS PLEASE

Before anybody comes up with cries of Great composition, David! (which I don't think anyone in their right mind would) I will mention that I shot this from the only position possible to avoid showing a bight yellow fire hydrant that is in back of the tree. I actually did a tiny bit of iPhoto retouching to get rid of a smidge of yellow tht showed through in the triangle on the left part of the tree. I just thought this tree had a lot of personality. Todd and I visited the firefighters of the Dewey-Ridgeway Firehouse in the Tenth Ward this morning to shoot a few photos for 10-10-10. (A most Auspicious Day) We arrived between calls, but Lieutenant Ted and his fellow Firefighters, Matt, Luong and Josh, were happy to spare a few moments for some photos. This is TW in action, or maybe he's just chimping. ;-) You can see TW's photos . Happy 10-10-10. Everyone!

Very Wet Orange Roses

Very Wet Orange Roses
Made by fallsguyd
I came up out of the Genesee River gorge after an exasperating attempt to get a decent Lower Falls picture in the rain, wind and cold. But in the close-by Maplewood Rose Garden I was flabbergasted to see that there were hundreds or roses still blooming! Of course only about 5% pf them looked decent. So in spite of getting absolutely soaked for the first time in a year or so, I ran around and shot some of the few good ones. Very Wet White Roses later.

I met Mick while he was taking a break. He and a few others were practicing in front of Lower Falls, then later on set up an obstacle course further down the river. He was clearly passionate about kayaking, having mentioned a number of different locations he'd just been to within the past few weeks. I decided this is a good a place to start with a 100 strangers series. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the
