Na een helse zoektocht (met dank aan onze begeleider Chris) naar een bus naar Kunming vinden we er uiteindelijk een. De rit duurt een drietal uur en brengt ons naar het centrum van Kunming.Kunming is een stad in het zuiden van China ten zuidwesten van Chongqing. Het is de hoofdstad van de provincie Yunnan en heeft ruim 1 miljoen inwoners, de agglomeratie heeft 2,4 miljoen inwoners. Kunming ligt aan de noordkust van het Chi-Dian-meer,op een hoogte van ongeveer 1900 meter. Het is een belangrijk bestuurlijk, commercieel, en cultureel centrum voor Zuid-China en een belangrijke vervoersslagader, zowel voor de luchtvaart, autoweg als spoor. De stad heeft spooraanslutingen met Vietnam. Kunming is de grootste producent van koper van China. Tevens wordt er steenkool ontgonnen, en is er een complex ijzer- en staalfabrieken. Andere producten uit de stad zijn fosfor, chemische producten, machines, textiel, papier en cement.
