Chikubujima is a sacred island in Lake Biwa, which has three main places of worship, a shrine and two temples. One of the temples is dedicated to the worship of Kannon, and is the 30th of the 33 temples on the Saikoku Sanjusansho (33 temple)Pilgrimage. With 300yen, you can get two small unglazed plates. If you successfully throw the plates through the torii, your wish will come true wether you believe it or not. I missed both! Can you see many broken plates on the ground around the torii? Those are not pebbles but the plates.

So, after the shrine up the hill, where snakes are an important icon, I was visited a little while later by this little guy. He's maybe 40-50 cm long, and his scales look gold in the sunlight. Any herpetologists know what kind this is? The Boyfriend says it's a sign that the island likes me, Can't argue....

You're supposed to buy two little clay discs up at the shrine - write your name on one and your wish on the other, and then toss 'em down. As there was no one manning the shop, we couldn't buy any. But the gods gave me a nod anyway....
