All the prayers were offered with incense which hawkers sold on the street outside the temple in small bundles. You lit the sticks, knelt and bowed towards the temple building (there were at least 20 different ones throughout the complex) and then stuck them in these large bronze basins filled with ash.

In Chinese lore lions are regarded as protectors so every gate or door that is worth defending (be it temple or home) has a pair of stone or bronze lions on either side.

The lion to the right of the gate is male and he rests his paw on an orb or ball. I think this is supposed to signify the world but don't quote me on that.

On the left is the female who's paw is resting on (crushing?) some small animal. It appears to be a lion cub, though it's hardly a maternal gesture.

This is the side of a bronze bell about 5 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter. It was covered all the way around with writing.
