Nan Lian Garden
Made by sftrajan
Diamond Hill, Hong Kong Occupying an area of 3.5 hectares, Nan Lian Garden is built in the Tang Dynasty style. Besides adorned with characteristic timber structures, the garden is studded with clusters of bizarre rocks and planted with lots of old and valuable trees. In the garden there are a souvenir shop, vegetarian food restaurant, Chinese tea house and multi-purpose function room to cater for the various needs of visitors. The Garden is built in the classical style of the Tang Dynasty (618 AD to 907 AD), on the blue print of Jiangshouju, the only Tang landscape garden the original layout of which can still be placed and traced today, and the shape of which bears a significant resemblance to the Garden site. Hills and rocks, waters, plants and timber structures are built and arranged according to classical Tang style and rules, accommodating the local environ, and the best view of the sprawling mountain range to the north is taken as the seamless backdrop. The Blue Pond 蒼塘 is a stretch of calm water on which floats the reflection of the surrounding scenery: the trees, the hills, the pavilions and the passing moon in the evening. In the water other colours gleam and glitter: the red, the gold, the silver and pearl of the golden carps. Song Cha Xie (松茶榭 Pine Teahouse) stands on the north shore of the Blue Pond, fronted by a broad covered veranda on the water’s edge, its central court sporting the rocks excavated from the local site, a prominent placement of bouders signifying the Sumeru Mountain, a holy place of wisdom and beautitude in Buddhist cosmology. Gentle breezes waft through the surrounding veranda, bringing the cool of the water and the fragrance of tea to refresh the visitors.

Nan Lian Garden / "Pavilion of Absolute Perfection "

Hong Kong The pond is the central feature in this garden. It embraces the centre piece of the garden: the Pavilion of Absolute Perfection and the twin bridges of access. The configuration of this central feature has a highly symbolic significance. In Chinese culture, the lotus is much appreciated because it grows in muddy water and yet rises above it in pristine purity. It grows upright, is single-minded in its aspiration upwards and undistracted. It signifies serenity and tranquility, joy and peace. Yet its stem is hollow and receptive. The lotus is also symbolic of revelation and enlightenment. The Lotus Pond gives the name of the Garden, which means, literally, South Lotus Pond Garden. HPIM2081

Nan Lian Garden - Bougainvillea glabra

Paper Flower (Bougainvillea glabra), also known as lesser bougainvillea, is the most common species used for bonsai. It has shiny green, slightly hairy leaves and magenta colored bracts. Bougainvillea, a native of Brazil is a deciduous (leaf losing), climbing woody vine. Tiny white flowers usually appear in clusters surrounded by colorful papery bracts, hence the name paper flower. Single and double flower forms are available. The woody trunk tends to be twisted and the thin stem have sharp thorns and dark green leaves. Bougainvilleas can be easily grown as a hedge, an arch or a tree on the ground and in pots. Bougainvilleas available in a variety of species, is ideal for bonsai. HPIM2043

The twin bridges, Zi Bridge and Wu Bridge, connect the Pavilion of Absolute Perfection to the north and south shores, on a north-south axis dividing the Lotus Pond. The two arch bridges are built, in full timber, in the old traditional way, in bright rainbow red, reminiscent of the ancient Tang style, now lost in modern Chinese architecture. Standing over the tranquil water of Lotus Pond, rippled only by dropping leaves and passing breezes, the twin bridges compliment and indeed contribute to the wholesome serene ambience in which the pavilion and the surround all but play a part. The Mill 水車磨坊 Further up the path stands the Mill, a rustic cottage, a watermill. The Mill is thatch-roofed, built in an unpretentious and simple style, in reminiscence of a traditional farm house, standing out in an otherwise scholarly oriented setting.
