Victory Monument, Bangkok

Originally built to commemorate those who died fighting the French in border skirmishes during the first half of the 20th centrury and built in a very European style, Victory Monument now stands amid a heaving ocean of tarmac, concrete and 24 hour a day traffic. The Thai name can be roughly transliterated as Anusahwrichai Sumorobhumi (often shortened to 'Anusahwrichai' or just 'Anusahwri') which literally means Battlefield Monument. It can be seen as a defiant symbol of Thai independance in the face of Western imperialism; surrounded by the British and French empires for 150 years, Thailand remained the only nation in South East Asia (and arguably the only nation in the far east with the exception of Japan) to retain complete independance from the west.
