CM_Karen tribe.jpg
Made by Lenstrail (www.lenstrail.com)
The Padaung are a sub-group of Karen (Bwe Group) living in Kayah state of eastern Burma on the Thailand border. They number less than 40,000 people in total. The Padaung call themselves Lae Kur or Kayan. They have their own language which belongs to the Kenmic group in the Tibeto-Burman language family. The Karen themseves are not one homogeneous group but rather a loose confederation of heterogeneous and closely related tribes. Among the smallest of the Karen tribes in Thailand are the Karen Padaung.

Another of my city walk-abouts. Whenever I remark upon the footpaths in Thailand I get that reserved for farangs look that says simply that I must be mad! Don't I know no one walks anywhere in Thailand? It is just too hot! Chiangmai (and any other Thai Township!) Thailand. เชียงใหม่, ประเทศไทย, Camera Canon EOS 350D Digital Exposure 0.006 sec (1/160) Aperture f/10.0 Focal Length 36 mm ISO Speed 100

The Night Chefs
Made by berik
Just 5 minutes walk from our guesthouse, and close to Chiang Mai Gate, the nightly food stalls were a good place to stop on the way home. With food to suit everybody, especially if you like fish (!), the stalls were always busy; some customers calling in on motor bikes to collect a snack, others browsing and buying at a more leisurely pace, before sitting and eating nearby.

king day
Made by woowoowoo
We were coincidentally in Chiang Mai for the celebrations of the king's birthday - he's 79. The Thais love their king and everywhere you went there were fresh coats of paint, bright yellow bunting and new 'king' t-shirts. On the eve of the actual day, I saw a group of guys putting up this enormous banner of the king and queen.

CM_Elephant camp.jpg
Made by Lenstrail (www.lenstrail.com)
In Thailand elepant camps are very common and popular. The elephant drivers (mahouts) have today found in tourism a major way of doing business with their elephants. Elephant camps are therefore part of a major tourist activity and considered as a way of safekeeping these giant animals in their natural habitat.

Fingernails
Made by Cybjorg
The Fingernail Dance is performed on special occasions such as the welcoming of guests or important events in Buddhism. The movements of the dance imitate elephants walking, which in days of old were considered to be valuable animals of higher class. Performed at Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center.

Chiangmai Moat 3 A rare occasion on which I was able to thoroughly enjoy a solitary stroll along the moat around Chiangmai City. Still remaining peaceful despite all the turmoil of recent weeks. Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125) Aperture: f/8.0 Focal Length: 49 mm ISO Speed: 100

I suspect most of these kinds of cars are or were originally owned by British people living here (not the old Datsuns and so on of course) - this one has a GB sticker on the back - but they definitely end up in Thai hands a lot of times as I've seen Thais driving them.

Chedi Luang catches the morning sun
Made by woowoowoo
This was an inspiring sight to wake up to. Our second floor room had a balcony that gave an endlessly interesting view of one corner of the moat and road that surrounds the old city. This glimpse of the old chedi was one of the highlights.
