Hama and one of the norias

Hama, on the Aassi river, has a large number of these norias, until recently an essential part of agriculture. Some still work, but the lower levels of the water due to dams up stream & poor rainfall often means they can't turn. Before, one could hear one was reaching Hama before seeing the town - the wheels whine - or sing! I didn't like the noise the first time I heard it, but now it is the song of Hama, & if I can't hear it there, I feel the town isn't fully alive!
Norias and ancient mosque

The Great Mosque is one of the oldest in Hama, - there was a Christian basilica there before, up to the 7th century. The mosque was built by the uncle of Saladin, famous from stories of the Crusades.

Next to one of the oldest mosques in Hama, these norias are in front of a good restaurant where, in summer, one can sit in the courtyard by the norias, or on the rooftop overlooking them.

No tripod, had to use a stone! but I couldn't resist trying to catch my favorite noria, in the town centre, all lit up and still turning...

I find the structure fascinating! Easy to replace beams when they finally break .. Some of these beans are probably very old!
