Colossus of Memnon (2a)

Colossus of Memnon (2a)
Made by Lazy B
The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, on the West side of the Nile opposite modern-day Luxor. This is the first of two views of the northern statue. The statues date from the 14th century BC and their original function was to stand guard at the entrance to Amenhotep's memorial temple (or mortuary temple) in the ancient city of Thebes. The temple was a massive cult centre built during the pharaoh's lifetime, where he was worshipped as a god-on-earth both before and after his departure from this world. The Colossi are virtually all that remains of the temple. The statues are made from blocks of quartzite sandstone and they face East towards the Nile and the rising sun. Their imposing height is variously reported as either 18 or 23metres (about 60 or 75 ft), including the stone platforms on which they stand. For a better impression of their height, see this earlier photo in my stream: Following an earthquake in 27BC, a fissure ran through this northern statue and when the ancient stone was warmed by the early morning rays of the sun it was heard to give an eerie moan. The Ancient Greeks thought that the statue represented King Memnon, and the sound was him greeting his mother Eos, the goddess of the dawn. Visitors came from miles around to hear the music, including Emperor Hadrian, in 130 A.D. The Roman emperor Septimius Severus tried to repair the statues in 199 AD, and inadvertently silenced them forever. I wonder how many of our modern creations will still be around after 3,400 years! The south end of the Temple of Luxor was an addition constructed by Ramses II during the XIX dynasty. The great court is surrounded with well proportioned papyrus bud capital columns. Reliefs cover the interior walls. Within the court can be seen the tip of the minaret of the mosque of Abu'l Haggag.

The intention is for the avenue of sphinxes at the Luxor Temple to eventually join with the one from Karnak.
