Salim runs a coffee hole-in-the-wall on the edge of the old city. He is a football fan whose favourite teams are the ones in Tripoli and Juve. He even recognised the Spurs jersey that I was wearing. Maybe he is dreaming of one day playing for one of the three teams whose logs are on the mugs behind him, ie Juve, Al Ahly or Al Ittihad of Tripoli.

The Libyan people are very friendly, very much unlike the international community's perception of them. There is no haggling of tourists and many people wanted me to take photos of them. Some tried to talk to me in their halting English but they were genuinely interested to find out more about me.

Most Libyan places serve either Arabic coffee (my drink of choice) or what they call Nescafe, which is thick cappuccino with a thick layer of what I think are crushed almonds and chocolate on top. Trust me, it is ace, and that is saying a lot coming from a person who hates milk with his coffee.

A pet shop in the market in Tripoli's Old City. My Libyan friends were very amused and quite shocked when I asked them if these animals were bred to be sold as pets or for food. This is a perfectly legitimate question from anyone who has visited similar shops in China.

I think those are intestines hanging on the hook next to the butcher. And yes, the black spots are flies but I think one should not be so squeamish since you will presumably wash and cook the intestines before eating them.

One occupational hazard of taking photos in a market is when someone offers you food, say an olive, after brushing away the flies that had been resting on said food. In this case, I ate it.

The mug in green represents the Al Ahly Tripoli football team and the one in red is Al Ittihad, who also plays in Tripoli.
