Bathroom wall

Just had to include a shot of the mosaics that cover the walls leading into the Baths. I'd love to have mosaics as colourful in my bathroom. Apparently these mosaics represent Morocco itself. The four main cities have their own colours (Marrakesh is red-ochre, Rabat is White, Fez is green and I can't remember which is blue). These are woven together with yellow and sometimes black - also colours of the country.

Mosque

Casablanca has one of the largest Mosques in the world. It's also one of the few that allow infidels like me to go ambling about inside. It is certainly exceptionally beautiful - just like a modern-day cathedral in scope and craftsmanship. Stunning and no doubt cripplingly expensive... but sometimes you have to do these things for posterity. I believe in the value of the Thing of Beauty.

Turkish baths

Beneath the Mosque is a complex of baths - both turkish and Moroccan. The difference being that turkish have a pool of water (like this image), whereas the Moroccan Hamam is just a big tiled floor and you get a bucket and a sponge. They're currently not in use, and are thus open to camera-weilding tourists.

Rooftop Apartment in Casablanca

Shot this the first morning in Morocco. I arrived late at night and this is what I saw when I opened the blinds. I was definitely not in Kansas any more Toto. Looking out from my hotel room onto this what looks like rooftop apartment possibly. Photo taken May 1992

I wish I'd taken a second one of this - it was incredibly dark in this are of the mosque which made taking non-shaky photos near impossible. I've kept this in the group as it was so almost good. One day I'll buy myself one of those walking-stick/tripods...

World's biggest bathroom

The ablutions room at this mosque has to handle thousands of people. Stone flowers continuously spout water amongst colourful mosaics, in a collonaded hall that stretches the entire length of the mosque above. Amazing.

And again, here is the mosque from across the full square. On important religious days, this square is filled with the worshippers who all bring their prayer mats, face mecca and make their prayers to god.

So the last day, we got taken on a tour of the city by van. At the market, I had this great olive sandwich. I have no idea how it was as awesome at it was, but I am now obsessed with it.

Ah, I'm a big fan of chiaroscuro now... I love the combination here of the ight streaming into the windows, and the shadowy columns and dark floor.

Minaret-top

This is the decoration at the top of the minaret. I love the colours, and the delicate arabesque archways. The mosaic done in mint green and white.

King's way

The King of Morocco has his own personal walkway up the very centre of the big mosque of Casablanca. I guess he bankrolled the operation...

Exqusite detailing on the qoutside of the mosque - and a guy just sitting around reading the paper on a beautifully carved fountain.

Bath fountain

This is one of the alcoves off the main bathouse. Looks like the water bubbles up out of the floor here to run down into the bath.

Carved flowers

Flowery section carved into the spiral-sides of the starcase that goes up into the women's section of the mosque. Such detail!

Just a beautiful fountain, exquisitely tiled in mosaic patterns of peacock colours to match the nearby mosque.

These are the doorways at the bottom of the minaret., surrounded by the hand of fatima pattern in the stone.

Intricate textured plating on one of the doors. *All* the doors are decorated beautifully, just like this.

Filigree lantern

Every detail here is exceptional. I love the filigree lantern-shades in the halls outside the baths.
