Venice, The Rialto Bridge

Venice, The Rialto Bridge
Made by Mick O'Reilly
The first dry crossing of the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge built in 1181 by Nicolò Barattieri. It was called the Ponte della Moneta, presumably because of the mint that stood near its eastern entrance.[2] Detail of the bridge. View from the Rialto Bridge The development and importance of the Rialto market on the eastern bank increased traffic on the floating bridge, so it was replaced in 1255 by a wooden bridge.[2] This structure had two inclined ramps meeting at a movable central section, that could be raised to allow the passage of tall ships. The connection with the market eventually led to a change of name for the bridge. During the first half of the 15th century two rows of shops were built along the sides of the bridge. The rents brought an income to the State Treasury, which helped maintain the bridge. Maintenance was vital for the timber bridge. It was partly burnt in the revolt led by Bajamonte Tiepolo in 1310. In 1444 it collapsed under the weight of a crowd watching a boat parade and it collapsed again in 1524. The idea of rebuilding the bridge in stone was first proposed in 1503. Several projects were considered over the following decades. In 1551 the authorities requested proposals for the renewal of the Rialto Bridge, among other things. Plans were offered by famous architects such as Jacopo Sansovino, Palladio and Vignola, but all involved a Classical approach with several arches, which was judged inappropriate to the situation. Even the great Michelangelo was considered as designer of the bridge. The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte, was finally completed in 1591. It is remarkably similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded. Two inclined ramps lead up to a central portico. On either side of the portico the covered ramps carry rows of shops. The engineering of the bridge was considered so audacious that architect Vincenzo Scamozzi predicted future ruin. The bridge has defied its critics to become one of the architectural icons of Venice.

the entry of S. Apollinare Church. (from www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM7DG0_Chiesa_di_SantAponal_C... : Church of St. Apollinaire was founded by refugees from Ravenna in 1034. St. Apollinaire was their patron saint and Sant'Aponal is name of the same saint in the Venetian dialect.... The current Gothic design of the single nave church with a flat coffered ceiling originates from the 15th century, when was the original church completely reconstructed. St. Apollinaire was suppressed in 1810 by the French army, which stripped it of its art and furnishings and used the church for the detention of political prisoners. Church was again consecrated and reopened in 1851 (with five of its eight altars returned and the high altar taken from the church of St. Giustina in Castello). Finally, the church was closed in 1984 and from that time is used as deposit for marriage registers by the Venetian Commune. The notable Gothic marble relief of the crucifixion above the rosette window is from the late 14th century. Relief below the window (see photos) shows Christ with the Virgin and St. John the Baptist under a Gothic arch and is flanked by saints in spired niches.

Gondolas in Venice

Gondolas in Venice
Made by Ginas Pics
The gondola is propelled by a man (the gondolier) who stands facing the bow and rows with a forward stroke, followed by a compensating backward stroke. Contrary to popular belief, the gondola is never poled like a punt as the waters of Venice are too deep. Venice law requires that gondolas must be painted black. It is estimated that there were several thousand gondolas during the 18th century. There are only some hundred today, most of which are for hire by tourists, while a few are in private ownership and use. The cost for a ride, about 40 minutes are app. 100 Euros ... a must for all honeymooners. Those who just want to have the feel of it for a short ride across the Canale Grande can use a traghetti - gondola for a couple of Euros only. Gondolas on Flickriver

- WIKI

Pana-Panahon, in the tagalog dialect refers to the changing fortunes of time. There's a time for everything. Life with its vicious and unruly pathetic cycle, needs to be dealt with. While time is unpredictable at times -- sometimes decision making is the humans' most valuable tool. Like whether its a good time to ride a Gondola or not -- in this weather.

Our train into Venice got in at 3:30 AM. We couldn't check into our hotel room until 11:00 AM, so we walked around and had the city to ourselves. If you are ever there, I highly recommend getting up early and appreciate the city before the cruise ships pull in and start unloading all of the tourists. It was beautiful.

Taken from an opposite side of the canal -- on an empty port. At this point, most of Venice, seems to be eerily quiet. The locals were anticipating floods as the tide was rising. With the rain and the temperature dropping, most of the tourists are out of sight. The Grand Canal Venice, Italy
